I just tried a simple query and it crashed my Firefox ... did OK with Internet Explorer, though.

It freezed my FF for a few seconds the first time I used it. Now it works without any problems.

It will never replace Google, but it is still fun to play with.

For quick info its not bad, i had about 10 mins playing with it and it was quite good , i doubt id make a point of going to it for info when google is so easy. But ill bookmark it just incase there is an off chance i might think of something to use it for.

Then again if 1 in 10 people that visit it bookmark it and then start to like it , it may prove to be a success.....even if it isnt a google beater it still maybe a handy tool

(i get that it's a techie mathmatic type of site, but really how many people need it or will use it?)

i just searched cleveland, ohio --- not impressive results, i'd rather use answers.com or wikipedia for the general data and specifics on a subject matter

Yeah other than it's very impressive math abilities, it seems more like a novelty to me. I did find it somewhat neat how I could give it where I live, where I wanted to go, and it instantly told me the distance, but that's not something that'd make me come back everyday like Google or Wikipedia.

I did my "simple semantic search engine test phrase"

how old is Bjorn Borg and it was the first to really answer correct!

Very impressive!

I have tried it with Hakia, that is supposed to be semantic also but it doesn't really work as nice.

It's really cool as a "geek tool", but I don't think in example when your average Joe types "dog" that he's looking for this: dog - Wolfram|Alpha

After trying it out a couple of times, I have come to the conclusion that this is not a competitor to Google, but instead Wikipedia and other dictionary/information related sites.

I am sure that WolframAlpha was not in anyway intended to compete with Google, by its developers.

People use Google not only to find information, but to find sites to buy products from.

Try doing product related searches: "cheap books":
cheap books - Wolfram|Alpha

"domain registration"
domain registration - Wolfram|Alpha

A good way for them to make money would be to have sponsor to such searches.

ex. when searching for "domain registration" it will give the result of an explanation of how to register domain names, then at the bottom mention and link to some domain name registrars like GoDaddy and 1and1.


Hmmm... I can see that WolframAlpha gives the opportunity to put WolframAlpha on ones own website...

Do you think it would be possible to use WolframAlpha in you website and have related Google Ads on the same page? Would Google allow this?

I dont see why Google would not allow it, but you never know.

Yea, Wolfram Alpha is a very smart baby but it's still in diapers.

and then try:

you'll see what I mean.

WolframAlpha seriously sounds like something out of a Star Trek movie

Why not go with something short or generic, especially if you're planning on taking on the big guys. Even Wolfram.com isn't a very strong name imho.

WolfMan or Dracula! would have been more brandable! 8-X

not difficult to bamboozle it

for starters when typing if you accidently add a [ on end of word, its stumped, rather than correcting or asking if that was a typo

secondly, forget it Reece as your next search engine, if it can't even serve you up what you look for most :hehe::sold:
