Wolframalpha = not cuil

Serious wtf were they thinking naming it that?

I believe it doesn't fully launch until Monday. I'll play around with it a bit, however I don't expect it to replace Google. I said this on another forum -- will say it here as well. What do you think is going to happen if I ask it to calculate the trillionth digit of pi? If it's as smart as it's creators say it is, will it let someone sending a "DDOS attack" of trillionth+ digit pi requests to crash their servers?

I think this has nothing to do with other search engines.
More like research tool?

Google and other search engines - list web sites based on your typed in keywords.
Wolframalpha - Do not list web sites. seems like it gathers info and interpret it based on your typed in keywords.

Sounds one heck of a lot more computationally demanding D-:

i think its wonderful
i think it can lead to many other things and i'm a big fan of my fellow Brit Sir.Stephen :gl::blink:

however , firstly i hope he does what he says and works with wikipedia and google, doesn't sell out etc. in time

i think he's the real deal though. he's worked his whole life for that. he is truly from academia, not the corporate world

also he really needs to use wolfram.com as his url not the alpha one.
he's been quite cute with his domain regges though, got most of main ones, even hyphenated

anyway, unfortuantely most of the net users are still searching for upskirt shots of Britney , not how many millimetres they are from the moon at this exact second, lol, so for most net users at this stage won't mean too much

as i'm always saying, 10 million people read the sun in the uk daily, the most popular newspaper
society is getting more stupid every day, not more intelligent. whatever the 'stats' or is it 'sats' :red:-, tell you

WolframAlpha seriously sounds like something out of a Star Trek movie

Why not go with something short or generic, especially if you're planning on taking on the big guys. Even Wolfram.com isn't a very strong name imho.

After I watched this, I have to say that it looks very interesting. I don't think it will replace Google, but it will surpass Cuil for sure. :sold:

no doubt he a trekkie. he a Brit geek

he wanted to make a name for himself
and succeeded :imho:

his alltime heroes are great mathematicians of years past, so naturally he wants to be a modern version

he also owns mathematica, which is sexy

WolframAlpha.com's WHOIS looks "ugly" to me: Wolframalpha.com - WolframAlpha

I hate it when a serious company uses Domains by Proxy, Inc. It looks so unprofessional.

If we assume this site will become more used then Google. :) just play along with me...

Then I would see at least two problems with this.

1. for website owners this would be bad, they would loose visitors because they would not need to visit the website, but instead they would get the information right from wolframalpha site. And therefor the domaining industry would be negative affected.

2. who controls that the information you get from wolfralpha is correct? How can I as user trust that it is correct?

For students this could be a very useful tool. BUT the main problem is the accuracy. In Denmark students are not even allowed to use Wikipedia as a reference in their projectpapers, because the information you find there is changeable by anyone.

If WolframAlpha (he really needs to change this domain name) collects information from all kinds of websites, including Wikipedia, the problem accures and you cant be sure that the information Wolfram gives is correct.

I couldnt find where to read about, how WolframAlpha collects and accumulate the data. Do any of you have a link to it, maybe?

Hmmm.... "Why don't you Wolfram Alpha it."

I don't know, it just doesn't have the ring of, "Why don't you Google it."

I think they should have taken a little of their development cash and spent it on marketing research.

Honestly though, until I get to play with it hard to form an opinion based just upon what it's supposed to do.

Wasn't Ask supposed to be the "better" SE a while back? Personally their results were horrible for the niche I specialize in so I really have no faith in their results for any search.

As far as I know it's not aimed as a replacement for google, but as something to compliment it. It's aimed towards knowledge, not quick answers or links. If you want your local takeaway, you'll googleit, if you want information on the origins of rice, or the way in which it's farmed, you'll wolframit.

I might have missed the point tho.

I think Wolfram Alpha is totally cool. I've been waiting for this all month.

Anyone besides me hear the words "temporary codename" echoing throughout these chambers?

If you think Wolfram Alpha is an odd name for a search engine, consider that Google was initially codenamed BackRub ;)

It's live: Wolfram|Alpha

I must admit that I really like it. Very interesting. Enter your birthdate, for example ("january 20, 2008"). :)

Today is the launch of the new search engine "Wolframalpha" What do you think about that search engine?

There was an article in The Guardian about Wolfram Alpha
back in April.

These excerpts from the article I think show how the Wolfram Alpha SE will differ from Google and other SEs:

"..itโ€™s a search engine that is on the web, not an engine
that searches the web
โ€.

โ€œIf (Wolfram Alpha) doesnโ€™t know the answer to something, it reverts to a more traditional web search engine system where it points you towards places that might have the information youโ€™re looking for.โ€.

Link to the Guardian article:
(Thanks to MHB of TheDomains.com where I first learned of
Wolfram Alpha and this article:

Wolfram Alpha gives more interesting data when you type "Google" into it than Google does when you type Google

I'm having fun playing around with it.. Looks like it'll make a great resource for travellers with it's rapid ability to predict distances and even draws little maps.
