The .mobi directory

:hi:

I have built a .mobi directory at dir.mobi and would like to hear some suggestions/improvement about the site. I have seen some really good comments in this forum and I know there some experts around. I would really appreciate any feedback.

I built this site with mobile user in mind. In place of using the dmoz.org directory structure with lots of categories and sub-categories, I limited those to maximum 10 and which are relevant to mobile users. Although I still have about 1000 categories to choose from. The main categories are Work, Learn, Play, Shop, Home, Money & World. I tried to make the directory very simple with just logo as image for faster download.

If anyone knows of good .mobi working sites ( not just domains), then please let me know or add URL at dir.mobi. I want to add good .mobi websites which will benefit mobile users. The listing is also free (till I change my mind!!!).

Very cool idea and good looking .mobi site. Did you have to use any database? or Script?

THanks,

Great. I suppose if the site validates as per the standards, it must be accessible on mobile devices. I thought SQL might give a problem. If it does not, wonderful.

SQL & PHP shouldnt give any problems because its server-side.

Nice domain name BTW :)

Excellent work. I love the domain, and the idea behind it. It's very fitting. :tu:

The categories seem almost 'too' deep though... but maybe it's just the shock of adjusting to the overall small size, and thinking of navigating with the small keys. Of course, that's going to be a issue to address with all mobi sites.

Btw, welcome to the community vcool. :)

Just one suggestion, you might wan't to offer users of older mobile phones (like me) a WML version-link of your site as well as XHTML, their are ways of getting the phone version with PHP, then you could re-direct to the most appropriate version for users.
Also im not too sure if .php URL ext's conform to standard for the .mobi's requirements, i *think* you have to be using an XHTML/XML ext to conform. Their is a way around this by changing your MIME-TYPES on your server.

Thanks db. You are right, it's bit of a shock to adjust to small display size and we all will have to re-think the web design for mobile apps.

bravo --

you should include on the dir.mobi a site a "dir" of mobi developers, so we can pay people like you to help develop our own mobi regs --

best of luck!

Thanks for your suggestion. I will try to make WML verions as well. Excellent suggestion.

As for .php ext, I could not see anything mentioned about this in the compliance guide. Only thing that was mentioned is the file type header should mention XHTML file type ( before <html> tags ),which I have done. If anyone knows more about this then please share your insight. If .php is not supported , then it would be difficult to do any server-side scripting. BTW, I checked my site with Nokia and Sony mobile simulator at mtld.mobi and it did not give me any error.

We are on roll here!. Another excellent suggestion. I will add the .mobi developer's section to dir.mobi.

Thanks everyone! I see some very good .mobi sites developed already. Some of them like dailyjokes.mobi, I will include in showcase. I am personally checking each and every site using the mobile simulator at mtld.mobi before including in dir.mobi and I will not be including any parked domains.
