So, for the past 48 hours or so, I've been trying to figure out the essential tasks involved in domaining as a "career" or whatever. As I understand it, here are the necessary skillset and tasks:

1) Research to find out what's out there, and discover the value of what you own, or what you want to own.

2) Monetization strategies (found through research), how to get more out of the visitors you're getting, etc.

3) Bargaining in order to ensure you get a good deal for what you do purchase.

4) General web toolkit-- knowledge of as much as possible about the web. HTML, CSS, databases, forums,

5) Networking. Being able to be friendly, make contacts and help each other out.

Have I got most of them down? What would you add?

The views expressed on this page by users and staff are their own, not those of NamePros.

6) patience - being able to hold out for the price you want if your selling or waiting for the right deal if your buying.

IMO

Sounds like a great topic for an article for dnjournal or some such....

Just the fact that you're intelligent enough to list those points shows that you are capable of becoming an excellent domainer.
Good luck!

7) The ability to gain wisdom over time, learn from mistakes, and ultimately become better. If I was still getting names based on how I did originally over 3 years ago when I started, I would have completely failed.

8) The willpower to STOP YOURSELF from just getting all names that look "decent". Lack of this willpower is what does a lot of people in. They either don't have the money to spend when the true deals show themselves, or they simply have an "average" portfolio that gets lost in the sea of millions of domains being listed for sale online.

i dont think that

4) General web toolkit-- knowledge of as much as possible about the web. HTML, CSS, databases, forums,

is necessary.

I dont know much about CSS (i'm old one, who like tables ;) ,
and i'm not going to learn this.
Of course it would be nice to know all about TTL and DNS and other things,
but i dont mean HTML, CSS, databases is necessary.

I personally think he is right, you are one bright light bulb buddy!

First of all, there is so many list's now days that this one does not surprise me at all, and I think it was a great idea for this forum too.
B, I think that you are in a great position as well as a great place to learn.
Lastly, I feel as though you will do just fine :)

#8 I'm very new to domain names as a business and the will power you speak of must belong to only the JEDI cause I too have fallen to the Dark Side of "decent" domain buying. Someone help. And "No. LUKE I'm NOT you father".

Anyway thinking you have a great brandable domain and then trying to sell it based on that brain cramp has been my downfall so far. I haven't picked a focus for domains yet. And I guess the good domainers focus when buying and selling. :alien:

Keep an eye out and an ear out for any new technologies, discoveries etc. research them to see if they are legit and reg decent names based on that.

Also...every day I am in "domain mode." That is: I am constantly listening to what people are saying and the words they are using, in person and on TV and I tend to add .com to the end of them. I don't know if anyone else does this but I do it a lot. I'll hear some slang or funny terms and write them down. Then I check to see how popular they are by google. Most times they are already taken but you never know!

And your dictionary and thesaurus make good friends. :)

I've been doing that for years lol figured it's about time to do something constructive with that little (dot) disorder :)

So true!

If I can add anything to this thread it would be the practice of "bootstrapping", investing $$$ right back into your business once you do generate earnings.

"An idiot repeats his mistakes. A smart man learns from his mistakes. But a genius learns from the mistakes of others."

And that's where the combined experience concentrated in the domain forums comes into play :hehe: :tu:

Very good points,

I will add mine, a domainer MUST visit namepros .com everyday. He must check what people are discussing, he must check how is his sales thread going on, If there is no sales, he must bump the thread, or do some marketing such as price drop.

I think a certain bit of intuition is necessary, as well. You must be able to look into the future and predict trends.
