I guess I was a tiny bit late at discovering knol, but to me it seems like a great idea from google. Anyway I registered a few knol related domain names and as I was doing that I discovered that a lot of good keywords were already taken!

Anyway, looks like theres quite a few people here who have registered some "knol" names, so I'm hoping some of you would like to showcase them. Or at least say how many you registered.

Yeah thats what I mean, so they obviously get income from clicks (parking) despite the domains being TM'd. But seems that if the domain is parked and isn't infringing the TM then they just let it lie.

Maybe if a certain domain made huge profits in someway then they'd come after you.

Likewise, the TM for YouTube was approved in Sept '07 and there are still a ton of Youtube names in use. Most - but not all - appear to be parked. One that is not parked, SearchYouTube.com, would sure seem to draw some traffic away from YouTube proper. So far, it seems, with impunity.

Go figure.

I don't know. 5000 C&D letters would be a day or two's work for a legal aide, I would think. It must not be something they can, or care to, curtail.

Also look at the Wikixxxx.com domains equivalents of the Knolxxxx.com domains you guys have registered. My guess is they are worthless.

Knol is going to be completely self sufficient, and won't need any information sites about how to use it or whatever you are planning to do with these domains. They do not have value simply because they have the word Knol in them.

While I appreciate everyone's enthusiasm for knol, given Google's trademark filing, I do not believe these domains have any future value. In fact, I would say they are a liability; they possess negative value.

On the other hand, the thousands of sites that have the word 'google' or 'youtube' or 'blog' in them ONLY have value because of these words. Those that draw significant traffic, as I suspect "SearchYouTube.com" does, for example, probably have values significantly greater than their costs.

Have you looked at KnolStuff.com and SquidKnol.com? These sites are drawing revenue from their use of the term "knol". They may be shut down. But if not, they stand to refute your argument.

It's late here. I'm trying to get an auction form completed and should be asleep. You're right about the term blog. It is generic, not TM'd, and doesn't make my point. But SearchYouTube.com is one example of hundreds if not thousands of sites capitalizing on TMd terms, including "google" and "youtube". Whether or not these hundreds or thousands of examples are law suits waiting to happen - or are making use of a relatively safe and lucrative loophole - is precisely the question on the table. I don't know the answer to that question. I do know that WHEN a domain was registered (e.g. before the announcement) is not as relevant as whether and to what extent it infringes on the TM holder's proprietary interests.

You are probably right. I suspect the TM on KNOL will greatly limit the value of KNOL-related domains. I would just like to be sure before I drop a bunch of potentially lucrative names.

For those that think they will get a lawsuit, you won't get a lawsuit. At most if google is not happy with your name they will ask you to cancel it, until then do as you do. If you don't cancel it then they may take matters further, remember lawsuits are expensive, they will avoid a lawsuit unhless absolutely necessary

These are just my thoughts. However, I could be wrong....

I have a trademark for a very popular word which has been featured in movies, books, games and more. However, I can't go around suing anyone whom uses this word as my word is only good for the service class that I applied for which was for a board game. Google applied for use of the name Knol for publishing services, information services and education and entertainment. Mr. Knol.com has a site about vacuum cleaners, he probably won't sue Google because they don't infringe on his vacuum business. Google probably won't sue Mr. Knol because his selling vacuums won't infringe on their service classifictation and it would be bad publicity.


When I googled knol I got over 1,000,000 entries. On the first page I got knol.com (vacuums) knolfarms.com, knology stock quotes, that's 3 different businesses. I'm sure that there are thousands of people whom have used or are using the term knol. Google is probably aware of all this as it was their search engine that I found these listings in. However, they probably don't care as long a nobobdy infringes on their mark. I've never heard of Google doing anything mean to really piss off the public. In fact, their knol seems like a way of getting people together for doing good. They might even welcome a lot of people contributing, starting websites talking about knol etc., being that it's suppossed to be some type of open knowledge sharing network.
