The irony of Domain Tasting and more ...

I was reading several articles and opinions about domain tasting and i feel a bit disgusted with all of this, not only for the registrars but for simple users too ( http://digg.com/tech_news/Domain_Tasting_Another_Way_ICANN_Blew_Domain_Registration )

First of all some say Domain Tasting is the same as Domain Parking which is 100% wrong

I don't like Domain Tasting because they take all the domains i would like to register BUT don't i need to register them for the same reason ?
Get a nice falling Dmoz, Pageranked, full of links domain to point to my site or build a new site above this name or park it ?

The fact that this is used from big companies and registrars make it bad , BUT if everyone had the ability to do it make it GOOD

>> Honestly how many people would shout if they were in the position of registrars or had in general the ability to do the same ? <<

Can't this be translated to : "Let me eat too, i want a bite, don't take all the pie for yourself ?" Is this the real case OR is it "If i can't be a registrar and take advantage of this, none will"

The 5 days grace period is as old as i can remember (many years before) and nothing happened. ICANN still gives limited access for every registrar directly to the registry. Imagine 100s voltures trying to rip the flesh of the poor domain the second comes unprotected from the registration
Nasty illusion, yes but real

Spammers take domains, set up a mail server, spam and then deregister the domain when it's blacklisted says the guy in the article above
..... yes and ?
Do we need a real "Minority Report" (the film) where they will judge you before you register the name ?

The other guy(chick?) says that users are misleaded to parked sites when they type a typo of a known site and this hurts the legitimate business
How can you judge who is the legitimate and who is not and can you do for this ?
Is there any universal registration office that makes a business legitimate and don't allow anyone else to use the same letters in another order OR for another usage ?
It's like playing Scrabble and if you get the same letters you and your partner to be disqualified at once
Does she suggest a name to be registered with all possible typos to the guy originally tried this letter combination ?
If she makes a site with few paragraphs she thinks that her site is valuable for the visitor ?

I don't like the world critiques that blame the universe for their personal problems or the luck of experience or their ignorance OR for what they can't do by themselves

Critiques that are so devoted to their "faith" of misuse that they will totally shutup if they perform the misuse on their own at their backyard

Users mispell the domains = bad people that take advantage of them
Parked site full of ads = bad people set up these sites

and this continues to every level
Porn = Internet is bad
Phishing = Internet is bad
Fake credit cards usage = Internet is bad
Privacy issues = Internet is bad
Spam = Internet is bad
......

Internet is not a playground or painted pink with dolls and toys
It's an intelligent form of communication, a real world, if all of us don't learn, educate (ourselves and the people around us using internet), think and act mature we will not have any future to this

PS. I believe the problem of the domain tasting is not the results but the exclusivity of the usage
It's a fact from history that if someone doesn't get a share of something becomes angry and demanding (even in civilization (the computer game) may loose if you don't take care/feed your people)

PS2. I'm not a registrar because i try to view this from another perspective

Some interesting points, although I don't find this movement
to be "ironic" at all; contrariwise, the "tasting" movement is to be expected: in a fast-clearing commodity market, any advantage by the first mover is expected to be taken, loophole or otherwise.

For the sake of a more fair playing field, limitations on this activity should certainly be in place. You've touched upon a more general issue of information on the 'net: what should the bounds of commercial speech be? Perhaps you have, as I do, libertarian tendancies, although we probably both agree that spam is a regulatory issue. But the real issue here remains incentive compatability: it makes economic sense for registrars to "taste" -- in order to make the game more fair, those incentives must be adjusted, just as they were in the spam game (although we need more.)

Limited domain "tasting" overall might be an equitable (although still problematic) issue. We need to work to ensure the quality and fairness in the domain industry, and closing the "tasting" loophole would go a long way BUT it is crucial to understand why: as the 'net is the ultimate market leveler, this is another rigidity which should be upended in efforts to bring a more level commercial playing field.

There are a number of quality (but low traffic) names that I have been able to acquire at reg fee because a company 'tasted' them and then dropped them, names that would otherwise more than likely ended up in pool or snap auctions. In a fully efficient market in which Snapnames win everything (or the ill-fated CLS), every domain goes to the highest bidder. Domain tasters disrupt that efficiency and give the small guy a chance to grab bargains.

There is much to be gained from analyzing the patterns of these tasters, what they keep, what they drop, how long they taste names for before dropping them and being agile enough to take advantage of what you learn.

Key points here. Domain tasters are routinely spitting out great names. At least they leave some crumbles on the table for us :blink:

domain tasting is just the "reality check" of the Internet... I mean this kind of stuff happens every day in real life, where the superfunded gain all the advantages by pouring tons of money into an open gap of opportunity in order to reap all the benefits and close it off from anyone else... This is what they are doing. As a relatively poor person, this is nothing new to me and I wouldn't expect anything less. This is not to say it is right, but in a world that favors big business, what can be done except what Lasher said... Try to stand around and pick up the scraps.

or create your own opportunity...
