Doubt the exposure on ebay will be enough for the reserve , but who knows ?
It's an Awesome domain - It should open some eyes of the firm "Ovt w/extension" Believers ~ Not as high as you might think ! - Still a great name .....

Yeah, the original reserve I suspect was $5m and they saw things were going so slow, so brought it down to $2m. The 50,000 uniques a day they claim is probably all bullshit, people coming back for news and stuff, plus bots. I deal with wireless solutions, and the last thing I want is to blind type some stupid generic site to get what I want, a quick search on Google will tell you precisely who the leading companies and resources are.

Why do you think the owner wants to ditch the name when things are supposed to boom (despite the chronic security problems this platform faces today)?

The dotbomb mentality all over again, some people just can't get over their first love.

I think they have it listed as per month not per day:
"Currently this domain is generating more than 50,000 unique visitors per month with NO advertising or promotion."

Heh, I wonder who will actually win this auction... the bids are pretty high for such a great domain. :tu:

I'm wondering which one is the insider who will stop bidding just prior to reaching reserve :)

Prime domain collectors will be very interested in this one, though it is definitely a costly collection. *giggles* And mole you're right with the generic domain, I don't go to dog.com for dog supplies, most people will go to petsmart.com instead. Same for auctions, anyone go to auction.com instead of ebay.com? :)

so I guess you've never visited weather.com for weather info, classmates.com to find old school friends, or mp3.com for music.

Well, maybe once for each of them in near 10yrs of internet. But that's me. Maybe some others do visit those sites more than others. Not saying generic .com are useless or anything, but they are not as popular as branded sites IMHO. When you think about online auction, will auction.com comes first or ebay.com? Same for online payments, paypal.com or payment.com? All personal preferences and depends how long you've been using the internet I guess. Those who has been around for years will most likely know more about branded sites rather than newer internet users who have no clue what is ebay etc. I think that's how generic .com have so many type-ins.

Flora.

I think both arguments are... ahem... a little silly. No disrespect intended.

We're talking about branded domains versus keyword domains. No matter which way you slice it, both types of domains can have significant value.

KEYWORD DOMAINS
I have visited weather.com, in fact I do so will relative frequency. MP3.com I'm not a personal fan of, but I am aware of its existence. Keyword domains also shine where a brand is not yet universally known. For example, if you needed widgets, and there was no brand match in your head, you'd either do a search or you'd try widgets.com. Many folks will try widgets.com first, to see if there is a "market leader" at the URL and if not begin the search. Will all users do this? No. But marketing are traffic is a game of numbers and percentages.

BRANDED DOMAINS
Auction.com? Never. When I think auction I head straight to eBay with the rest of the world. Branded domains are big business...

Again, I think both keyword and branded domains have significant value... can you tell me which "brand" you go to when you're looking for information on wireless networking/cell phones/pda's? There are several branded tech sites that you could have in your head right now, but none of them has a corner on the market like eBay or Amazon, etc. Given that this is the case, there is room for a keyword domain in this market IMHO.

Just my two cents.

Yes Idahofarmer, I do not deny there is no market for keyword domain. Like I stated earlier, always a market for branded sites and keyword sites. But more often, people visit "popular online sites" such as ebay.com. Btw, auction.com in my example is not a branded site, it will be under keyword site. :)

Does it make branded domains appealing in any way though?

If I live in the middle of the desert and end up building a successful business does that mean the desert is an ideal location for a business? Or have I done well for other reasons which have overcome the poor location of my business?

I don't agree, I've never heard of a single "brand" type domain selling for 6 figures.

Is this going to be the biggest SHILL or biggest THRILL to start 2005? We'll see.

what "brandable" domain has ever sold for more than 6 figures? I hope you're not going to start talking about developed sites, as that generally has nothing to do with domain values.
