“Ancillary” .com domain name purchases might be jeopardized when companies start using .brand domain names.

"On last week’s Verisign investor conference call, an analyst asked the company what effect .brand domain names might have on .com.

Verisign CEO James Bidzos said that, even if a company adopts a .brand domain name, they won’t abandon .com. His point was that if a company like Google starts using .Google instead of Google.com (my example), it’s not going to let Google.com expire in order to save $8 a year."

Well, that seems to be a valid perception!

Looks like a nice way of saying "cybersquatters" without saying the actual word. Even with the .xyz stuff, Google still uses .com and so do many other companies marketing internationally.

A legitimate brand name, starts with the filing for TRADEMARK protection.

After that, you can start suing anyone who uses a domain with content that infringes in your trademark scope of service - regardless of domain extension.

The problem is that many large brand owners would have to have to have a dedicated IP department filing actions every day against registrants infringing on their their brand/trademarks.
