I'm not sure exactly what you would do with the domain, but it certainly is a nice trophy to have... There aren't too many domains that were first regged in the 80s.

I believe it's not so much the letters as to what the domain represents. In some ways it's like a collector's item. Only analogy that immediately comes to my head is US currency. A quarter from the 1940s is worth more than a quarter from 1999.

I believe domain name's value determines by its quality not its age unlike wines or whiskies.
From my point of view, I think the price paid for the name is fair.
