I usually yank the chain of you TV guys, but this one's for real - why IS the cost so sky high? All my hundreds of dot coms and dot nets each still cost the same as always - about 10 bucks (and usually a bit less than that).

So hey, what's the other $25 or so for, then?!

Just wondering.

$25 is for .tv domains regged through Enom.tv and were part of the Demand Media promotion.

I believe that if you reg them at Enom.com - you pay $40 or so.

Because they can sums it up, hehe, and if they think they can get more, I'm pretty sure they will try to squeeze us as much as possible. They would very much like to be the front and middle man in the sales business, not just the front.

not only does .tv cost more than a lot of extensions to reg but it is also one of the only extensions where they charge different renewal prices based on what the name is.

I need a clarification on the renewal price thing. Who's "they" and what formula do they use to determine renewal price? Why would anyone want to invest heavily in a tld where the success of your site could hurt you in the long-run as "they" decide that your domain is now a premium domain and charge you accordingly.

Or... am I just being paranoid. :)

You are being Paranoid.
Not sure Where you guys/girls keep coming up with this stuff; it's been discussed to death (try a search in the forum for renewal). There is no fluctuation in renewal pricing. You renewal is what you paid for the name. If you're at Moniker it's $27.49, at GoDaddy it's $39.99, and Enom.tv it's $24.99, etc... If you purchased a Premium name from Enom/EnomCentral then your renewal rate is what you paid for the premium (unless negotiated to a lower renewal rate).

Different registries charge different amounts. Why is a Ford Truck price different than a Chevy Truck price? Let it go...
