It appears that large companies are finally starting to realize the benefits of owning a powerful generic domain name and they are ponying up large sums of money to join the elite. Publically traded Citrix Online (CTXS) is the latest member to join the "We get it" club with their recent acquisition of team.com which now redirects to their GoToMeeting product page. They acquired GoToMyPC® in 2003 for 225mm. According to their about us page, their suite of software includes Citrix® GoToMyPC® for easy, secure remote PC access from anywhere; Citrix® GoToAssist™ for live, easy remote support; Citrix® GoToMeeting® for online meetings made easy; and Citrix® GoToWebinar™ the industry’s first do-it-yourself solution for Web events. It looks like team.com is being used to promote GoToMeeting.

This deal comes shortly after another service company joined the club. Salesforce.com's recent acquisition of force.com took a staggering 4 years to complete. Purchase price is unknown but one can only imagine.

This is excellent news for our industry as prices will continue to rise as more and more mainstream companies realize the benefits of owning and branding powerful generic domains. Now if we could only purchase the next team.com before "they do"!

Have a great weekend! :sold:

300k for team.com is massively under priced. This domain should have gone well over a million since the potential for this domain is incredible.

That fits in with similar sales like Cafe .com which I think was sold on GreatDomains for the same kind of amount. In contrast Cage .com was only 30k at Traffic. :-/

I too am a bit confounded. I'm trying to price links.com. Guy.com went for $1,000,000 while team.com sells for $300,000. Based upon this, I would guess that links.com can probably fetch high six figures. Would this seem about right to everyone?

That was this month. But just last month guy.com sold for $150K on sedo. Moral of the story: a name will sell for as much as one is willing to pay and another is willing to sell.. An end user will most likely pay more than a reseller. Most end users aren't paying 2K buying from Traffic; They probably never even heard of it.

That is a very nice domain you have. I would approach some large players in the search market with a proposal to buy it. You should develop it into some kind of social linking network. With a domain like that, extensive development could yield millions if it goes viral (or even semi viral).

I would surmise that if you sold just the domain, a minimum offer would be around $650,000 with a final price of $1.25m. Just my guess. Domains sales are kind of crazy lately.

Hi exponent,

Thanks for the advice and info. What I am thinking is to partner up with a mezzanine stage company, with excellent technology, that has the ability to go public. A company that has some unique social linking software, as you suggested, would be ideal. It would be difficult for me to develop my own software in this very crowded category, unless I raised a substantial amount of capital. Otherwise, I am constantly on the lookout for some reasonably unique software that I can purchase, and use as a launching pad for a new site.

Thank again for the advice.

Rich

Yeah i saw that too and i was shocked. From $150,000 to $1,000,000 in 1 month time.

I also think 300k was vastly underpriced... Makes me wish I had millions to buy domains with :)

Yes, I would agree. It seems like team.com would have greater generic value than guy.com. I guess, what I am hearing, is that links.com should have equal to or greater value than guy.com. Thanks.

Team.com does have great generic value but it's not always a win if you price your domain so high that it's unattractive. Team.com value might be high 6-figures but it might have to site for 7-10 years to find a buyer at that price. $300k is not a small amount...low for sure but not entirely unreasonable.

Links()com is definitely more valuable than guy()com.
Internet is all about content and links. The potential for links()com is too huge to imagine.

I agree with Labrocca, $300,000 for Team.com is not unreasonable. I can think of a lot of uses for Team.com but there is no obvious cash printing machine commercial use.

In my mind 300k is a bargain. The buyer should have a party and rejoice due to the fact that he more or less stole the name.
