Madura is an Indonesian island off the northeastern coast of Java. The island comprises an area of approximately 4,250 km² and a population of about four million, most of whom are ethnically Madurese. Madura Island though a very poor island has many interesting attractions for travelers. The island is one of Indonesia’s smaller islands and is located northeast of Java. The island is divided into four regencies, Bangkalang, Sampang, Pamekasan, and Sumenep.
Each regency has something to offer to tourists although right now it is the Sampang regency that is most focused on tourism.

The Madura Language has about 10,000,000 speakers andis related to Javanese but standard Indonesian is widely spoken.
The Madurese are also known for their fierce attachment to Islam, putting their more slack Javanese cousins to shame on the devoutness front.
