Tables or images?

I need to add some effects on my website, and I can do it with two ways:

1. Either by creating more than 15 tables for each page (with no images, just bgcolors), or

2. by using small images.

What is the best way to make my site load fast?

I thought that by having only tables (and no images at all), my site would load very fast, but a friend of mine told me that this is not a good idea (and that I should use images) because of server load-or something like that...

Is that true? Which method do you think is the best?

hmmm if you are using 4 basic colors and just resizing it schould take a matter of a few secs with images.

i'd use tables though itd easier. but if you want abstart set up do images.

Also if you have a good host a few images won't kill your site at all.

Adding some images enliven your sites IMO and don't influence much your sites loading.

It depends on what effect you want. However, if you plan on making tables and using bgcolors, you might as well do it with CSS, which will be light on the html side and the stylesheet. I think that you should only use images for effects you cannot do with code, such as having a certain picture displayed or making a round curve. For everything else, you can pretty much do it in CSS.

Im curious to know what these effects are. If the desired effect is to have an array of solid coloured squares then going for the css or tables route would be fine. I'm pretty sure though a gif with only a few solid colours wouldnt be to much more load time compared to the code needed to generate the tables.

Why not use CSS and get around both of those sloppy decisions?
