Yesterday was my girlfriend's birthday and today was our 2 year anniversary so after hitting 5 casinos yesterday, we decided to go canoeing on the Big Elk River today... 8 miles in about 4 hours or so.

We dumped the canoe once when the current knocked us into a submerged tree... had a heckuva time righting the canoe as the current kept sucking it further under the tree. Had a similar situation further down river but managed to keep the canoe upright.

Big Elk is a popular spot for canoers with beautiful bluffs overlooking parts of the river. Water is generally pretty crystal clear and usually about 5 foot or less. You can see trout and turtles swim under the canoe.

Lots of people on the river today.. we saw three different people lose their canoe in one turn we had trouble in so we don't feel too bad. (We've only been there twice).

Both of us got REALLY sunburned tho... my legs are on fire right now!

At least we were smart and left the good stuff in the car.. I lost my good digital camera there last October when we hit a submerged boulder!

I once spent 6 hours rafting and got burned so bad, I couldn't even put a shirt on after because of the blisters sticking to it..

Ouch. Sounds like you had a good time though. I guess that could make up for the sunburn lol.

Well, we're not great at navigating a canoe yet... that current tends to get pretty fast on the turns and we got pushed into a few overhanging branches at one point.. one knocked me flat on my back into the canoe... my girlfriend was still laughing about it the 45 mins it took to get home (I didn't laugh quite as hard!).

Isn't it Sunburnt not Sunburned?

I believe either would be considered correct in certain circumstances... you wouldn't say, "He was sunburnt", IMO tho. You "might" say, "I was sunburnt", though I've always said sunburned.

Being sunburned is one of the most horrible things in the world. I have been burned too many times to even think about. Canoeing / kayacking is one my favorite things to do. I have done it on the Potomac River several times.

You can put yoghurt (plain yoghurt, not the one with fruit) on the burned skin... it really helps. Just apply a thick layer and leave it there for ~half an hour.

Been using Aloe Vera gel.. problem is, my legs keep cramping now which is NOT fun! I was supposed to work two hours this afternoon.. took today off.

I never have look when on the water like that I always seem to get sunburtn more on the water, one time I was doing some thing on some river with the army and we was out for like 5 hours and I was the only one who forgot to put sun lotion on. Another time I was on holiday in Spain I had sun lotion on but it wasnt strong enough and got so burnt I could hardly move. I hate the stinging of it so I know how you feel! just get some after sun on it

I'm glad you had a nice time Dave with your girlfriend, as it's memories you'll never forget even if you are in burning pain now. :)

I was sunburnt pretty bad on my arms and some in my face this weekend as well. Went to the Denver Broncos Fan Fair both Saturday and Sunday and with the higher altitude (mile above sea level) it makes you burn twice as fast. It was worth it though as got many autographs from past & current players and photos of them.

Especially seeing & getting autographs from the cheerleaders in person up close made it worth it (they're even better looking in person than on tv :D ). :lala:

You think your sun burn was bad...... Last year I went to Puerto Vallarta. I usually don't burn so I didn't put sun screen on. That was a big mistake. My whole body was burnt. Even the tops of my feet! I couldn't move. I couldn't put my shoes on without pain. It even hurt to stand! So if you are ever in Mexico, be sure to put some type of sun screen on. It will save your life. My skin peeled for about 2 weeks after I returned from Mexico.

Exactly.. my legs and ankles are swollen. It most definitely hurts to stand.

You know what is even worse than the sunburn itself. Its when you start to heal and the itching and peeling. The itching from a bad sunburn drove me nuts. :tri:
