Subdomains?

Hi,
hope this is right section?

i have a domain and think its best potential is dveeloping it's subdomain.
Have never done before.
How effective is this and do search enginges recognise this?

For example..if i owned 'lats.com'
could i develop the subdomain 'f.lats.com' as a flat/ apartment website?

Sure, thats exactly what del.icio.us is doing. The typical "www" is basically also a subdomain.

i highly doubt that f.lats.com would not help with search engine optimization, however, flats.lats.com would help (for the keyword "flats"). in other words, i don't think they recognize hacks that break up keywords.

flats.lats.com would counteract the hack idea behind, wouldnt it?

If someone bases his SEO hopes solely on the keyword in the domain, a domain hack is certainly not the best way to go, but then the domain is just one of many possible factors (just look at all those *icio.us domains).

Subdomains are not a problem (they are the same as domains for search engines), but hacks are not recognised. Now if "f.lats" becomes your distinctive brand it will help with search results.

kind of an aside, but I think lats.com would do better as an exersize or workout site. lats is slang for a muscle group in the back. Its not as clever an idea but it would probably rank easier for the "lats" keyword than the "flats" keyword.

i think thats a great domain with a lot of value make it an excerise site i think your actually lowering its value by making f.lats.com
