I know this is a much discussed topic, but after no small amount of research I remain a bit puzzled.

I have a hosting account with a single domain hosted (drtwisted.com which actually has no content on it). I then have a subdomain http://doctortwisted.drtwisted.com which visitors are unaware of when they visit the site http://www.doctortwisted.com. My research indicates that the disadvantages of this are:

1. A shared cpanel - by having separate accounts you would have a cpanel for each individual account
2. I cannot resell web hosting
3. If you want WHM and control over DNS zones, you must purchase a Reseller account
4. If you need multiple SSL certificates or multiple IP addresses, you must purchase a Reseller account
5. You cannot have subdomains on subdomains thus if I wanted http://newsite.doctortwisted.com I can’t do it on shared hosting

I can’t see the need for separate cpanels (does anyone?) and I don't want to resell web hosting.

I don’t understand what no.3 is?

On no.4 the only advantage I can see here is that it would stop people see all the different sites that you had? Which could be important if I was trying to hide my ideas, but at this stage i don't have any worth stealing!

My research indicates that there is no SEO impact of shared hosting, and even if the main site should get banned the subdomains are not affected and vice versa (as long as the sites are not linked to each other) – is this accurate?

On the other hand I have seen advice stating that if you want to experiment with untested or controversial methods, do so on a new domain. But why would you need to?

The domain you are trying to create here is not the domain you control so obviously you cannot create subdomains on subdomains. Otherwise people would have loved to create. subdomains on google.com and yahoo.com or msn.com

agreed

agreed, but other than that restriction I dont see any SEO impact of shared hosting, and even if the main site should get banned the subdomains are not affected and vice versa (as long as the sites are not linked to each other)

This is also wrong as you can put addon domain names on the same account and it works that way from single cpanel.

Nick - thank you for both your points which move me further from thinking that separate accounts is worth it.

It seems the upside of switching away from shared hosting is not worth the cost?
