StartLogic Hosting Reply to Breakstuff
I only just discovered this forum, so my reply is a month late. I suggest you check out WebHostingJury.com for user reviews on tons of hosting sites. If I had done this in the first place insead of trusting webmaster review sites, I never would have gone with StartLogic for hosting.
My hosting nightmares began in November when Yahoo with whom I was hosting with at the time, raised the hosting fee for my sight from 14.95 to 19.95. I switched to Hostgator, and for $9.95 had a lot more for my buck than was included with the Yahoo price. Yahoo continued to bill me inspite of the fact that I cancelled my hosting package no less than 3 times! I finally sent all of the information to my credit card company who decided in my favor.
The only problem I had with Hostgator was not their fault. I am forced to use dial-up where I live, and at the time, I couldn't get the cpanel to load properly. It took 20 to 30 minutes and the icons never did load. I cancelled my hosting account (this was done within 15 minutes) and purchased an account with StartLogic. I spent the end of June and most of July trying to get my site visible on the net. (Uploading it was not a problem) I uploaded about 3 times, but the site was scrambled each time.
It took 4 business days before I finally got an email from a real support person. They then called me on the phone, and it was apparent that the support tech did not have a clue. He told me that my link names were too long and I had used some capital letters in them which was confusing the Linux server. That didn't explain why my index page (all lower case and very short) did not load. It also didn't explain why 2 of the other pages initially loaded one evening, and then scrambled the next morning!
The next issue concerned an anti-popup script that they had inserted into my web pages. All of my pages were validated before I uploaded the site. On the evening that two of the pages were visible, I noticed a validation warning. When I clicked to see what the problem was, I saw that the script that they had inserted was using old java code that would not validate with my Doc Type. I don't use popups, but I had no problems with them inserting the code as long as it was clean code. I even gave them the correct code. There techs' response was that he couldn't see a problem! To top it off, they offered me a free month and then charged me on the first of August anyway!
I cancelled both of my sites with them and was told that the cancellation had been done. Guess What? They charged me again, a full 6 days after the cancellation! HostGator cancelled my site in 15 minutes. Startlogic told me it would take 10 to 15 days for any refunds. After reading the reviews, I know there won't be any. Incidently, iPower is just as bad. I purchased domains with them and they tried to coerce me into buying a hosting package in order to be allowed to manage my domain. After I sent them a very pointed threat, I received the information needed to access my domain!
I tried another test drive on the cpanel with HostGator in mid July and it loaded in record time. I ran back to HostGator and bought another hosting package. Their support was great when I was having the problem, and they never gave up. They have more than proved themselves, and I am overjoyed that I can finally host with them.
Never rely on Webmaster review sites. Always check user reviews.
I hope this has saved someone the grief that I and many others have gone through.
