Hey,
I've been designing a few pages here and there but nothing fancy by any means. I was wondering how most did it. I have NVU and GIMP. No Photoshop or dreamweaver yet :(. Do you all just think that a box here and a box there would look good or is there a set way to start(top to bottom?). Any info would be great.

how i started was find some free templates and go from there. i always sketch out my ideas before trying to convert them. it gives you a "map" of how to do it.

there are so many ways to go... if you are using table start from the outside and work in, that is what i normally do

Your website doesn't necessarily have to look amazing. Work on functionality first, then you could always make it look pretty later. With just a simple Google search, you'll find that most websites aren't visually appealing. But if you really do want it to look nice then you'll need to put a lot of time into it. Try to find some random template at Template Monster and look at the layout. Then make something similar to it. That will give you more experience and it will give you ideas to try new things

Thanks for the replies. I know the things take time, just harder when not using the best software but mine works. Sorta like yearbook layouts I guess, it used to take forever for me and ended all sloppy, and now they are some of the best in the company. Will google other templates and look around. All of these ideas floating in my head need to come out sooner or later. Thanks.

I would agree. That is how I started. Eventually I started asking questions like how do I do this or what does this mean. If you keep doing/asking that then eventually you will gain experiance and expand your knowledge.
