Hi everyone

I am looking for some advice

I have a large forum running vbulletin.
Site seams fast sometime and slow others.
I know it all depends on how many users are using the forum at the sametime, but is there anyway to allow the site extra memory etc for mysql to speed it up a bit?

Hello David!
Could you please give more information about your requirements and about your current usages? I assume that will spotlight your needs and gives possibility to suggest you something exact

David, vBulletin performance can depend on a wide range of factors. For instance, checking up on any modifications is always a good place to start. If many mods are introduced, it's only a matter of time before performance begins to degrade, particularly if they require more queries.

Secondly, is this hosted in a shared environment, or does this install have its own server?

In the way of directly tweaking MySQL; certain tweaks made in my.cnf can certainly have an influence. However, it will probably take some testing and observation to arrive at the best configuration. I suggest Googling the topic to learn more about it, there are some pretty good guides out there.

It could have something to do with the amount of bandwith you have.

If you want fast connection to the DB you need to have it hosted on the same server as site. And if you have large forum I suppose your solution would be VPS
Good luck

In a sense, yes, but once you have a relatively high traffic, the number of disk operations may become the more important problem, and a dedicated Mysql server (in close proximity and very well connected to the web server) may make more sense.

Yes, you can give MySQL and/or PHP more memory. I would post your question along with the explicit details of your current configuration on the VBulletin.com forum or search their forum.

I had a similar problem with my site. The problem was cause of a large number of simultaneous page requests. Now your webserver has a maxno of requests it can handle at a time, the rest of the requests are queued(hence the slowdown). What I did was increase this maxno(less requests queued, faster load). Though it will eat more "everything"(cpu, memory) now though lol. But it was exactly what I needed. If you're running your own server or vps, I suggest tweaking apache's config. All the best :tu:

Speed of forum depends on many factors. So, not surely say what the problem is.

You are right. That is the common one and that is impossible to think about everything beforehand

Having two seperate servers (Web Server, SQL Server) is the best idea in my opinion.

Doing this will speed up both your site & SQL because it will be on a server completely dedicated to it and will not eat up processes on the web server. (This can be considered a form of load balancing)

It also may help to reduce bandwidth usage on the webserver.

That could be good from the economy side but i'm not sure that would be good idea at all for the speed.

I suppose that is better to have huge dedicated server but one instead of the bunch of the servers
