I'm new here and I need some help, please, about my domain. I've had it for 5 yrs or so and I used it to sell horses.
A marketing person emailed me and wants to know if I will sell it, and if so, what asking price I have for it.

-If someone wants to buy it, shouldn't they make an offer? It's not like I had ever considered selling it.

-Do people actually email domain owners asking if they will sell their name? I never heard of that before.

-What would a domain name like this be worth? It's just my farm name but I suppose could be used for other things.

If it's worth a ton of money I guess I would consider selling it. I have no idea though and would like to have some sense of what I could expect for it.
Thanks very much, Janice

Hi, you may want to look at this thread - http://www.namepros.com/showthread.php?t=135688&highlight=scam+appraisal

It would'nt surprise me if you see similarities in the email. :) If in doubt you would be best to put the email in a thread (in Discussions) if it looks suspicious someone here will know for sure.

I do hope it is genuine but whatever you do - do not pay anyone to appraise the domain if you are asked to.

Hi gazzip,
Thanks for the link. It doesn't look like anything at that thread though. Here is the basic text of the email-

>>>Hello, we have a client in Arkansas that is interested in buying your domain name www.osagecreek.com . Would you consider selling the name? and if so, how much would you charge?

Thanks for your consideration.
>>>

It's from a marketing firm, I checked the website and it looks legit.
Osage is a common name around the southern midwest, so it could be that one firm would like the name?
Obviously it would have to be a price we both decide, but typically what kinds of prices do names like this go for? I think it would have to get to the 5 figure range before I'd think about it, so maybe it's not even worth discussing with her.

That's always a sign of a scammer.

Seeing that you've owned the name for 5 years though, it seems kinda doubtful. They usually go for freshly registered domains, thinking they can victimize a new person to domaining.

It won't hurt to reply that you only "accept offers". If they're serious it will give them a chance to write you back with one. Or if it's a scammer, this will be his opportunity to say he needs an appraisal.
As far as value for the name goes, it's really up to you. How much is it worth to you? If you're not comfortable letting it go for a couple of thousand dollars, then don't. Ask for more. On the other hand, if you would be pleased to get a few hundred out of it, then sell.
The domain alone, to me, is probably only worth a few hundred to an end user, unless you know it's a big company. If you can find out more about the person or "company" doing the offering, you'll always have more leverage when asking for more money.

That's good (it makes a nice change :hehe: ) I do'nt consider myself experienced enough to offer an appraisal yet but I am pretty sure you will get some here over the next couple of days.

good luck & welcome to NP's :)

ps - love the picture of the cat & dogs

If they want your domain badly enough, they shouldn't have a problem shelling out at least low $x,xxx.

Over the past year, I have gotten about 4 or 5 unsolicited offers to buy my domains. It isn't super common, but it does happen.
