Who lets a domain expire that they paid $7000 for?

I bought a domain 10 years ago at Pool for $160, I sold it over 2 years ago for $7000, the buyer developed it and I paid no attention to it until 6 months ago when I typed in the URL, it was a parked page offering it for sale, I did a whois lookup and noticed it was owned by a domainer, then I did a archive check and found out the domain expired, WTF?

I liked the domain and I wanted it back, I offered the domainer $1,000, he wanted thousands more so I passed on it, I contacted him again 6 months later and offered $1300, he accepted and we did escrow, so now I have it back in my account.

$160 @ Pool
$1300 @ Escrow

$1,460 Out.
$7,000 In

$5,540 Free money, like finding it on the sidewalk.

Makes me want to start keeping tabs on all the domains I sell.

Yup it's cool when you get your old domain's back

I sold a cloud domain last year on sedo for 9k - around feb this year, that same buyer emailed me and said they needed some fast cash - I ended up buying it back for 1.5k

it's funny when you get your old dn's bk :)

Maybe they expired, got hit by a bus, won the lotto, super forgetful/disorganized, some other major life experience. I wonder the same thing sometimes when I see good names expiring.

no actually until you sell it again it aint free money at all. it was free before you bought it again...

lots of people drop domains they paid for either as a domainer or end user.. sometimes its easier for people to scrap an entire project rather than think about a salvage operation.. this is especially true when whatever project you were involved in left a sick feeling in your stomach.

I have a similar story. I once sold a domain for $4000. Bought for around $400 at Namejet. Buyer never used the domain, after one year it was back at Namejet, So I snagged it again (there was competition both times).

It's always strange, but I guess people change their minds or business plans. It's a waste of money but it's not different than businesses throwing away their unused stationary that has become obsolete.

Bitter? Don't know where you got that, I hate to see anyone waste that kind of money, even when I'm receiving end.

I kind of understand where your coming from, but I'm still way ahead monetarily.

But I think your right, it was a failed project, otherwise they had almost a year to buy it back from the guy who first grabbed it at auction, that didn't happen..

I bought it from a domainer who could very well be a member here, and nobody likes to know if they left money on the table.

if a company goes belly up, they liquidate hard assets and usually let the non-tangible go.

the downside to this is if the original buyer comes back he'll expect you to give it back to him or some BS. i had someone pay $3000 for a domain and then never claim it. i emailed them numerous times and initiated the transfer but nothing. strange.

you've got the payment info, nobody bars you from sending a chunk of money back after you rebuy the domain if you care about them as you put it

So if she doesn't send them a chunk of money, she is bitter? That's your test?

I've though of keeping tabs on name I sold, but I never get around to it.
It makes sense to buy them a second time if they come back. If it sells once for a good price, it's likely to sell again.
And it's a nice feeling to have the name and the money both - in domaining you can have your cake and eat it too.

...a question that deserves an answer, I guess...

I would assume the death of the owner as previously suggested...

I have tried doing similar things (smaller amounts of money). The other person is embarrassed to admit their mistake or suspicious. Now if I feel I should not take loose money I donate it.
