Absolute newbie questions

Hi all,
Been lurking for a little while and reading a lot, just wanted to make sure I understand all of this before diving in. It's all still a little hazy...

Ok, correct me if I'm wrong please!
I'm hoping to start small, reg a few domains, park them and with the parked funds buy some more. Is this profitable enough to do so? I see links saying you're better to buy dumped names than to create your own but I'm thinking that might be difficult to do, yeah? Lots of competition on expired names?

So my thoughts are, reg domain(s), make some $$$ by parking and/or selling the doms, and snowball the profits. If/as it becomes more profitable, buy better domains and look to hold a portfolio of decent names. Is that how it works?

What are the costs here? Register the domain ($1.99 for a .info) and then park in the likes of Sedo or Parked (no cost?) and that's it??? Sounds too simple. What am I missing?

Also, what are renewal fees like? I can't seem to find them anywhere?

Ok, my new myself...but will try to share some bits of my knowledge....
As per I think, expired domains are sometimes risky to take coz they expired because they didnt had any value....OR maybe the owner just didnt wanted it....But the question arises WHY didnt he want it ?
You can browse websites and pick up few names.... Try creating them on ur own, use a dictionary...etc..... After that, if you wanna park thn its on u....As sometimes they put some stupid adverts in your domain which are of comptely low-class, thats why am scared sometimes to park my domain !
After buying, i think the best thing is to market around....Post in forums, auction websites, google some sites for domains and post there ! and by the Mercy of God, itll be sold ! Hope it helps ! and Good luck !

Dive in and do a little bit of everything and find out what works best for you. Its ok to start small just start and don't look back!!!! There is no right or wrong way to do it. Just be flexible because everything changes.

Parking domains is that simple...buy a domain, set up a sedo or other aggregator account(free), change the nameservers to point to sedo and get paid for click. But what is not simple is getting traffic to that parked page. I focus on expired domains because they already have existing links/traffic. The majority of my income from parked domains comes from selling them for as low as $xx to $xxxx.

Hello Clay,
Welcome to Namepros.

First off newly-registered domains will not make you rich overnight. Unless you are lucky a fresh registration will not get any natural traffic unless it has backlinks or a previous history as a developed site. Please note that if you park your domains at Sedo or elsewhere you are not allowed to artificially drive traffic to your names - this is against their TOS.
That's what makes expired domains desirable, often but not always they have some residual traffic that can be monetized (providing visitors will relevant parked pages). If you have a budget you may want to consider investing in expired names.
Renewal fees depend on the extension and the registrar. For .com $7/y is a very fair price. Obviously your parking revenue should at least cover your renewal fees - easier said than done :cgl:
Fresh registrations are OK if you need intend to develop them. This is a another approach which requires patience and hard work.

In a nutshell domaining is not a get-rich-quick scheme and there is a learning curve involved So feel free to browse around to learn more

A Domain Itself Won't Give You Money. Try to register domains with
traffic or you can waste your cash:

A) Type-In Domains.
B) Typo Domains.
C) Expired Domains with Traffic.

Please read other posts here to get a better idea of this market.
