Some 2008 goals met!

As I mentioned a year ago in this thread, I sold just over 1,700 domains last year, and hoped to sell fewer this year (but of higher quality).

Well, that goal was reached, barely. My final 2008 tally is 1,567 domains sold, with a somewhat higher average margin. Profits came out about the same (this year's extra revenues were largely reinvested in my portfolio, which has a greater worth now than at the end of last year).

I also hoped to develop more domains, and I've done so, with about 10 developed to varying degrees (the list is at randomo.net). Still not getting much income from them, but I hope that'll pick up as the sites gain age and ranking.

New Year's domain resolutions for 2009: still fewer sales (with still higher margins), and even more development. I hope all of you achieve your own goals for the new year!

Cheers,
Dave

Congrats randomo, you rock.

The post you did last year encouraged me to get going too. As on 31 dec almost 1k names sold :tu:

My margins need a lot of work but a start is not bad. :)

Superb work! How many of those 1,567 sales were to end-users?

"End-user"? What's that? (We domain flippers don't know that term ....) ;)

OK, the real answer is "about six". I have to say "about" because I'm not sure whether some Sedo sales were to end-users or resellers. But I had four definite end-user sales (three of which were $x,xxx & up). None of those resulted from my feeble direct end-user sales efforts, though; the buyers all found me, instead of the other way around.

Breakdown of sales venues:

NP: 749 domains (go NP! :))
DNF: 364
BuyDomains: 296 (but their buying prices have dropped, so I don't anticipate any more sales there)
private: 114 (mainly bulk sales to a few resellers I had met earlier through the usual sales channels)
SnapNames: 15
Sedo: 12 (mostly at reseller prices)
eBay: 10
TDNAM: 4
Afternic: 2 (but with high ROI)
NameDrive: 1 (a promising start to my career there, but nothing else ever happened)

Hoping for a higher percentage of end-user sales next year ...

Regards,
Dave

Good for you Dave, sounds like you have doing it strong for two years now. So having said what you just did I have to ask, how much did you make in 2008???

I understand that you have to ask ... and I have to answer in this way:

"About the same as I made in 2007."

(Sorry, but I can only share so much info in public. The rest is between me, my wife, and the IRS. ;) )

Of those 1,567 how many would you still like to have?

I noticed when I was a flipper, I would like to have back several that I sold during that period. A good 10-20 for me.

Congrats on all the numbers and I don't see why you can't tell us that you made 7 figures.. We all know you did. :sold:

Jeez...busy guy! Good job - congrats on doing your goals! I wish I could say I met my goals for the year but not likely, though given I really laid off buying 4+ figure names on secondary market vs. the 2 years before, I think I did okay.

Higher profits and more success in 2009

Well done - great result expecially considering the general slowdown. What proportion of your domaining income comes from sales? Do you have any income from parking or CPC from your developed sites?

It's nice selling hand reg or expired $7 domains to end users for higher margins but the amount of sales are lower, if you are selling that many domains a year for even xx-xxx average profit then I say profit is profit whether ya flip them or hold for the end user and good job, thanks for sharing where your sales came from and I hope you beat your sales record in '09 with a few more end user sales as well thrown in the mix, good luck. :)

Proportion of my domaining income from sales? Hmm, let me think ... divide by 7 ... carry the 3 ... OK, I got a rough figure here:

99.8%!

(Which is to say, I have almost no parking or CPC income. I had close to 1,000 domains parked for much of the year, and only a few earned more than $10 altogether ... so I'm just forwarding almost all domains to my BetterDomains.net sales site now. I do hope to bring in a steadier trickle of income from my developed sites this year, but I expect my sales to dwarf that amount for the foreseeable future.)

The only ones I really miss are the ones I got offers for on Sedo after I had sold them cheap! :)
