More than 6 months ago I sold a domain for mid $xxx and the buyer hasn't transferred the domain yet, even after several requests to do so.

The domain itself is set to expire tomorrow and I was wondering what sort of obligations I have, the domain is decent so I'm not going to let it drop but after the domain would have fully expired and been dropped from the registry would I still be under the obligation of transferring the domain as it never technically dropped, and if so how long would that obligation stand.

Also am in requesting the buyer to pay a holding fee and the renewal fee before transferring the domain to them, as that is my current thought.

This is new waters for myself as every other buyer I have had wants to transfer their domains as soon as possible, so any advice would be much appreciated.

Did you have a purchase agreement in place?

I would renew it then if the buyer shows up, they will have to pay renewal fee back to you. You could also return the money then resell the domain.

Not really sure what you mean here. What do you mean the buyer hasn't transferred the domain. You, the seller, are the one to transfer or push. Are you saying the buyer hasn't done anything with the authentication code? (If this is the case, his loss. Not your fault if you did your part.)

This was 6 months ago. Has there been no contact since??? (If no... maybe he died. I always think: how would we even know if someone we're dealing with online dies? It's a possibility.)

If the domain is their account and they have not changed the whois details, not sure if you can even renew it. If it is still in your account, you can spend $10 to renew it - $10 investment but may be worth it. You just cannot sell it again to someone (does not matter if agreement is there or not).

They probably have lost interest in the name and do not want to renew the name. What you can do is that reach out them, offer a price and see if they are interested in selling it back to you. Otherwise you can just monitor it and try to pick it up when dropped.

We still need a more clear description about the situation.

If you want help, please add more details.

After the domain expires, feel free to renew it and... it's yours! :xf.grin:

No need to let it drop. Domains are not owned, they're leased for a specific period of time. Once that's over and you pay the new lease (renewal), it's your lease! :sneaky:

I experienced the same a year ago. Except the sales price was 6500 and we used Escrow.

After I send the auth code buyer marks the name as received and I get paid. However transfer never happens. This was a medium sized corp. Many mails later and an inmail to the owner through linkedin nothing happens. I renew and about 6 months after I got paid they got wise.

I charged them another 10% for the trouble and they got an instant push, everyone was happy.
