July 11, 2007 - Earlier this week, the International Olympic Committee has designated Sochi as the host city of the 2014 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games. Thanks to this decision, Russia will host its first ever Winter Games.
Consequently, Sochi.info has been put up for sale. The domain was registered in December, 2004 in the Krasnodar Territory of Russia. According to CNews reports, we know that Nikolay Odintsov is the current sochi.info owner and he plans on selling the domain for 15 million rubles or $587,617.
At this point, talks are being held with two potential buyers according to Mr.Odintsov, “I am considering two proposals at present, the first buyer is ready to pay $500,000 for the domain, the second 5 million rubles or $195,872”.
The opinion of internet market experts regarding the real value of this domain are split.
Vladislav Kochetkov, Finam Investment Company expert affirms that 10 to 15 million rubles ($391,745 to 581,617) represents a fair market value, while Mikhail Gurevich, RBC Director General Deputy considers the site to be worth much less.
Mr. Gurevich stated that, “First of all, the life of the domain is restricted. It is not one of those domains which are always of current importance as, for example, cars.com. Secondly, Sochi Olympic Games domains do not operate worldwide. They are not of current importance abroad and will only acquire any major significance in 7 years”. According to Mr. Gurevich, the domain price should be ten times less than the current offer. He added that “It is not reasonable to buy the domain seven years in advance. Who knows what might happen to the domain industry during that period of time”.
At present sochi.info is not the only domain related to the 2014 Olympic Games among those put up for sale. It is also possible to buy s2014.com, sochi-olimpiada.com, sochi.ws and more. About 40 to 50 Sochi related domains are currently registered and we are sure that they will all be put up for sale soon enough.
