July 11, 2007 - Earlier this week, the International Olympic Committee has designated Sochi as the host city of the 2014 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games. Thanks to this decision, Russia will host its first ever Winter Games.

Consequently, Sochi.info has been put up for sale. The domain was registered in December, 2004 in the Krasnodar Territory of Russia. According to CNews reports, we know that Nikolay Odintsov is the current sochi.info owner and he plans on selling the domain for 15 million rubles or $587,617.

At this point, talks are being held with two potential buyers according to Mr.Odintsov, “I am considering two proposals at present, the first buyer is ready to pay $500,000 for the domain, the second 5 million rubles or $195,872”.

The opinion of internet market experts regarding the real value of this domain are split.

Vladislav Kochetkov, Finam Investment Company expert affirms that 10 to 15 million rubles ($391,745 to 581,617) represents a fair market value, while Mikhail Gurevich, RBC Director General Deputy considers the site to be worth much less.

Mr. Gurevich stated that, “First of all, the life of the domain is restricted. It is not one of those domains which are always of current importance as, for example, cars.com. Secondly, Sochi Olympic Games domains do not operate worldwide. They are not of current importance abroad and will only acquire any major significance in 7 years”. According to Mr. Gurevich, the domain price should be ten times less than the current offer. He added that “It is not reasonable to buy the domain seven years in advance. Who knows what might happen to the domain industry during that period of time”.

At present sochi.info is not the only domain related to the 2014 Olympic Games among those put up for sale. It is also possible to buy s2014.com, sochi-olimpiada.com, sochi.ws and more. About 40 to 50 Sochi related domains are currently registered and we are sure that they will all be put up for sale soon enough.

Whoever buys this domain name, would have to wait 7 years, to see if they would recoup on their investment.... Seems like a lot of time and a lot of risk? Or will the domain have appreciated so much in 5 years, that the new owner could resell at that time?

Im not sure I buy that he recieved those offers....

I hear yah EG.... I just dont see this being a logical purchase....perhaps im missing the big picture... but for a .info and for the time span it would take to recoup... I just think its a bad buy.

May be he is trying to market his domain internationally :) , more investors may be interesting and sure as long as your domain interest more buyers you will get the highest possible price and may be even result to overpriced sale in the end.

.com - looks like it was flipped to another buyer soon.
.org - parked godaddy page.
.biz .net - developed.

Maybe the buyer would also like TheSochiGames[.]com? I'd take a bit less than 15 million rubles ... ;)

Sochi.info is worth about $1,000 for novelty value. If I wanted information on the 2014 Winter Olympics I would go to where I get my online news from every day or read a newspaper. Whoever buys Sochi.info isn't going to have an army of top sports writers camped outside every event streaming up to the second reports back to the website. If Sochi.info is worth $500k+, WinterOlympics.info must be worth $5m because you can use that every 4 years, Olympics.info must be worth $50m because you can use that every 2 years, and Sport.info must be worth $1bn because you can use that all the time. The most likely scenario is that Sochi.info will never get sold or if it does it will go for a few thousand dollars in 2013, and if whoever buys it put in enough effort developing a temporary site they might just get half of their money back during the 3-4 weeks the games are on. If atSochi.info, inSochi.info, Sochigames.info and the other 10,000 reworkings of Sochi.info had better information on the Winter Olympics that's where people would go when they worked it out. None of that is relevant though because the organisations with the real information on the 2014 Winter Olympics 2014 will be global media behemoths with their own household brands to feed and Sochi.info won't get a look in.

I would pay a lot more than $1.000 for it though. And not for novelty. geo domains are doing very well with .info. Still, any 6 figures sale is a bit too much of a gamble. Will keep my eyes on this one

Sounds like smart advertising from Nikolay Odintsov rather than genuine offers.

Why do these BIG buyers prefer .info over .com? Something fishy...

Do you honestly think the olympic committe would allow any reference to the games on a non authorised site, they are incredibly protective. Already sent out c & d to ANY names even relating to London England 2012 - Sochi names eg TheSochiGames[.]com - will get similar treatment.

I can see tha name having some value as a Sochi promotional site but at best in to $xxxx.

"At this point, talks are being held with two potential buyers according to Mr.Odintsov, “I am considering two proposals at present, the first buyer is ready to pay $500,000 for the domain, the second 5 million rubles or $195,872”. " - which one would you take. :hehe:
