Sobs: My hosting just got hacked into!

How could that have happened? :td: :'(

I had filezilla on and I was uploading some files. At the same time I was scripting something using Dreamweaver. Everything was working fine, except for a few dreamweaver drop-down menu items that seemed to be loading slower than usual. So I decided to restart my PC.

After restarting it, I noticed a slight error with something I was just coding so I fixed it. As I was about to log into my ftp account to upload that file, I couldn't get in due to 'verification error'.

I panicked, checked 2 (out of 5) of my sites hosted on that site and I was being redirected to an odd site.

I "zoomed" to my main email account and changed the password (more like passphrase). My heart was beating so hard I could almost hear it...

Anyone know how my hosting account could have been hacked into? I scanned my PC using Spyware Doctor but it didn't find anything.

I'd make sure to do a good reliable virus scan as well as perhaps a second opinion when it comes to spyware scans. The correlation is a bit scary, but it could be a coincidence. Otherwise, when you get everything restored, verify that your scripts are all updated as this is the most common source of all exploits.

Thanks for your reply, CrazyTech. I really have to do a thorough virus scan

I feel so...betrayed! :'( I can't believe there are people out there doing such things and making other people's lives miserable! :'(

It may not be that your computer has been compromised :S

It's quite possible that some sick, twisted person decided to hack your actual site. From that, they extracted your passwords and then used the passwords to log into your control panel interface (Or FTP, whatever.)

Otherwise, you may have signed up to a site that got hacked (or a dodgy site) and your website was somehow associated with your account. From there, the perp probs just used your password to log into your hosting.

Anyhow; Change all passwords related to your hosting/ftp. Make sure that email addresses are what they are meant to be (Incase the person who did this changed them) and make sure that any recovery things related to your email addresses are what they're meant to be.

Sorry to hear about this :(

As Tobias suggested chances are there for the site to be hacked. It may not be your computer.
May be contact your host and they may be able to tell you about that. Also, they may be able to restore the sites from a backup if they have a backup policy.

Sorry to hear about your loss.
