I know the basic picture already, but I'm looking for more specific information, input and discussion.

Question A
Has anybody heard a rough percentage of NetworkSolutions dropping names that SnapNames successfully catches?

With them being partners, and SnapNames saying they get access to the NSI names before anybody else, I'm curious exactly how successful they are. GoDaddy/WWD has been dominating the .US/.BIZ drops. Is SnapNames doing the same for COM/NET/ORG?

Question B
Have you beaten SnapNames on a NSI dropping name using another service? Which service?

Hey db: I had a snap on a NetSol domain recently and Pool got it.

Think you could explain the "basic Picture"?

Shows how long since I chased a good expiring name as I thought snapnames got every "snapped" NSI name without other registrars even getting a shot...

Just a recap that netsol will keep an expired name for about 35 days. If the
name isn't renewed by then, they'll tell snapnames about it and wait for about
3 more days.

If there's no notice from snapnames within those 3 days, then netsol will let
go of the name and it goes into the registry. So it's actually a question of
how successful snapnames is in getting the name after it's deleted by the
registry, not netsol itself.

How successful is anyone's guess.

They would be 100% successful on any NSI name that a snapnames order is taken out on. The exclusivity gives snapnames first pick before a name goes to the drop cycle. Only if no one takes a snap on it will GC or WWD users have a shot.

Question B

Based on the above, if you get one elsewhere that was registered at NSI, then you haven't beaten snapnames, it's just that there are no backorders taken at SN.

It works the same way at GD and WWD. If they have a name, it goes through TDNAM's auction without bidders before it would hit the delete cycle for a namewinner, snapnames, or club drop backorder to get a shot.

These days, you have to look at the registrar of record to see where the best or only shot at getting a name will be. If it's an NSI name, you can place the backorder at Snapnames and not even bother with the others. Also notice that names handled like this don't get a new creation date after picked up, since they technically never dropped. you basically renew from the previous owners expire date. This is why you basically lose 60 days registration on a Godaddy TDNAM auction pickup from their own expiring names.

Mark, that's what I thought... what I feared actually. I know most of the tips and tricks for other scenarios, but I was not completely clear on the NSI/Snap relationship. :|

Thanks for the input. Same goes to Davezan, edits, Refrozen and Spike!
