I live in the UK,about 2 months ago I registered a .co.uk with godaddy, I have just received a letter from Nominet called 'Confirmation of Registration' asking me to confirm my registration with them to be sure my details are correct. Alternatively they say I can confirm my details with my registrar (which seems a bit weird to me as godaddy have never doubted my details). Is this sort of letter normal ?

I have never heard that before, mind you I don't deal with too many xx.uk's I'd say give them a call I am sure they would be happy to explain why or to warn you and maybe others about a possible scam.

Your details should be accurate on the whois and you should do this through your registrar only.

Everyone in the UK who registers a name gets them.

I have a whole cupboard full of them. They do take a long time to get to you and I don't know the reason for that.

No scam here folks, just a weird Nominet idiosyncrasy.

Yep, completely legit. Nominet is certainly different from the other registries, but I received the same snail mail letter when I reg'd a .co.uk. I had to log in to the nominet site and confirm everything. Nominet registrations are more registry-centric instead of being registrar-centric.

OK, thanks for the info. I might actually do what they want in that case :)

TWO MONTHS? That is very fast.

I regged a .co.uk on July, 2006 and just received the letter last month! :)

Second that.
If you don't want to do it then don't.
I've had names for years that I never bothered confirming.

And as others said it is not a scam.

I also have a big stack of them (which I recently put in the bin)... it's just another great thing about the .CO.UK that prevents rubbish registrations!

I throw it away, but if you need to change the details on a domain, it is possible to order another one for ANY domain: -

https://secure1.nominet.org.uk/request.html

So if you type in Microsoft.co.uk Bill Gates will get a shiney new code. :tu:

Yeah, its a pain in the ass getting snail mail - they told me that I can't change/update the whois with my register, it can only be done properly through them.

Thats why I now mention that its best to put the correct whois info when registering .co.uk.

Absolutely the most antiquated registration system in the world - even to sell a .co.uk name can take two/three months or more!

News from Nominet:

We will no longer be sending confirmation of registration letters to registrants. On registration, new registrants will now be sent a welcome email with log in details for their new account.

This might also apply to non-UK-based registrants, so check your inbox when you register a .UK name :)

To sell a name we usually have a turn around time of two weeks.

Any delays over that is either the buyer or seller being slow - Nominet themselves take a matter of days to process a paper transfer.

cheers,
rob.
