Are sitemaps recommended?

I always add my sitemap to google webmaster tools and yahoo site explorer i think it helps with google in particular the diagnostics tells you if there is anything untoward that might need a little attention.

Yes, sitemaps are highly recommended. They will help google to know better about your site. However, sitemaps have nothing to do with PR.

Sitemaps will not help with PR but please forget about PR its irrelevant.

Sitemaps will help search engines (not just google) find pages on your website especially if you have a lot of pages or a rubbish navigation system.

http://www.sitemaps.org/ is worth having a look at. Yahoo, MSN and Google are involved in that and 100% support the features mentioned.

Sitemaps will help you get crawled better and also if we are talking about google webmaster account it will give you some very good information and stats related to the site on which you can base your strategy for better marketing and improvements.

in other words, you aid the google bot find the information it needs from your site by using sitemap.

The obvious advantage of having a Sitemap is to help SE index your site better, if your site is not well laid out for search crawlers to index your site or some of your web pages might not get indexed at all. In this case, if you had a xml Sitemap which filled in that missing page, it would now be indexed and thus have a search ranking.

If you are working in google - google sitemap will be your way. But integration sitemap will not guarantee you something like highg rankings or so.
