Hi all,

I have a site which is over 1 yr old. Last week, I noticed it on Page 1 #6 for a certain long tail keyword. I started some backlinking since then and it moved to #4 on Page 1. I continued to perform off page seo and now it's gone completely for the keyword..it's no where to be found in Google. If I do a site:domain search in google it comes up.

Question is...will it return to it's old ranking? will it return with a better ranking? As of right now, should I stop the off page seo and link building completely?

Thanks

How did you link to it, where are the links from, how many did you create and how quickly?

It may or may not be related to the inbound links - often Google gives new sites a trial run for some keywords on p1. Frequently, this is short-lived.

There's also a Google update going on ...

Usually once the site is gone off the first page it is hard to get it back there. You must have got backlinks from sites that were not related to the page/your site and added a lot of them a lot faster. If you are working on getting backlinks.. gotta do it like 2-3 per day.

I think if you get an authority site's backlink to your page .. it might again show up on the first page.

Good luck.

My experience has been this frequently happens with new sites and they come back on their own in a few days/weeks.

Well if google finds you into attempts of linkback manipulation then you'll see yourself landing in google sandbox for some time. If they find no link manipulation then they might get back to where you were started.

Possible sandbox

Sounds like you got sandboxed for certain terms since your site still shows up with the site:domainname. Could last several weeks or several months. Just keep building. Use some 1,000 SERP search tool to see if your site is anywhere on g for that search term.

Thanks for the responses,

I was only doing 3-4 links a day every day.

I honestly don't believe in the whole relevant backlinking theory. If it is true, it's a terrible way of ranking sites because I can easily "sandbox" and perform negative non-relevant backlinking to my competitors to bring them down while my site climbs up. Not sure if anyone agrees? I would like to here feedback. Even Angela from warrior doesn't believe in the whole relevant backlinking theory and shes ranked #1 for highly competitive keywords.

It is normal, don't worry and keep building links constantly....

I think you need to wait a little more. It may be due to google dance. I have many similar experiences but after one week or two weeks my website will get back to the previous position.

I have discussed with some SEO people i know and i found that,In your case this looks like "google dance" phenomena. When there is position change or PR change or any sandbox possibility then google removes the result and put in sandbox. I strongly think this is what happened in your case.

Backlinks cannot hurt site ranking.

Can you share your site URL with us?

Sometimes such things happen. However, whiling doing link building work, pay more attention to the links quality rather than the quantity.

Hi there
First of all you will have to work on your site related keywords and search them on Google, and see it's are at which place in Google. than you get exact position of your site in search engine.
one more thing is that you should use Google analytic for your site statistics report, it's about your traffic source.

No you not need to stop link building just make sure mix up your keywords. Don't do link building on same anchor text and description to link your pages.

Use different variation of keywords around main keywords. Also, don't just link to one page focus on other website pages as well.

Backlinks are very important to get better SERP. If your site is new, ranking will change when start any offline and online campaign. It will take some time to get earlier rank or better rank. Keep building links.

If you were only building 3 or 4 links a day that would not cause you any problems. If it was 3 or 4 thousand a day with the same anchor text then you will have a problem.

Without knowing your site url and the specific keyword that you are referring to it is impossible to figure out what is going on. There is a problem associated with Google's personalized search that may make it appear that you are ranking better or worse than you actually are.

Try doing your Google search outside your Google accounts. This way personalized search will not be working and you will see the actual results that everyone else sees.

My suggestion is not to get much worried about it! It's a simple case and may happen with any site just started off page SEO. So continue your off page optimization. But look after from where you're getting linked back to your site. Don't try to post your site everywhere. Try to post in niche sites, do follow forums and blogs. Post unique content to your blog and link back your site. Social bookmark them and also write unique and interesting articles for you site. Post them on ezine. articlebase, goarticles and other good article directories.

I believe that this person stated that they are building only 3 to 4 links a day. That hardly qualifies as everywhere. Again without knowing the keyword phrase and his website it is impossible to provide more than general recommendations.

While your suggestions are good it still does solve his problem.
