Mankind is flying to space since some decades and to me it seems that space (space travel, space exploration, using resources from space) is trending more recently.

Missions to moon are planned by the Chinese and the Americans and it seems that everyone who can afford it, wants to get there. One reason probably also is the ongoing destruciton of our planet earth.

Recent news regarding space mining caught my attention. My impression is that future missions into space are not just for scientific purposes, but also to exploit resources and mine asteroids.

There seems to be potential, so I think it's worth to have a look in this domain niche.

As with any mining outfit on Earth.

Investors will need to be found to invest in any type of mining.

The problem(s) with mining anything on Earth are:

(I'm no expert just taking wild guesses here).

1. Most of the "best and obvious locations" have been mined to death or are taken for years with 100 year contracts whether it is gold, platinum, nickel, copper.
2. issues with pollution created via mining and refining. Going to have issues with EPA or their equivalents in other countries.
3. cost of shipping and storing raw materials. (proper re-entry into Earth's atmosphere and Gravity will do the rest. The only problem would be going to Space with empty cargo ships. I think "boxes" will probably be made in space using panels.)
4. refining.
5. finding cheap labor. (If AI and Robots will be available. Problem solved in space).

I think mining in space is just an obvious future.

Just give the Syfy show Expanse a try and you'll get it.

But I do think that the valuable elements like Gold and Platinum will "remain" in space as a store of value on other planets when we colonize.

I've read that the mined gold and platinum and even diamonds can't be brought back to Earth as it would devalue Earth Gold and platinum and Diamonds etc etc. The current holders of these wealth producing elements are not going to like their wealth to be devalued.

The more you have of something. The less valuable it becomes.

the other resources are a different issue like nickel and copper. Just my guess.

Helium 3 on the moon is a another story also.

Helium 3 is abundant on the Moon's surface. Probably why the Moon rocks that were brought back from space ended up disappearing.

Helium 3 is a possible clean fuel for fusion reactors.

I personally think if we ever do mine Helium 3 on the Moon.

That should be brought back to Earth to power our fusion reactors along with Thorium as another option.

and the dangerous radioactive Uranium, Cessium, Polonium, Plutonium and other nuclear material should be used by space craft in outerspace as a backup in case Solar is unavailable.

"The idea of harvesting a clean and efficient form of energy from the Moon has stimulated science fiction and fact in recent decades. Unlike Earth, which is protected by its magnetic field, the Moon has been bombarded with large quantities of Helium-3 by the solar wind. It is thought that this isotope could provide safer nuclear energy in a fusion reactor, since it is not radioactive and would not produce dangerous waste products."

And I'll throw this one into the mix.

Bitcoin Mining in Space.

Free solar power.

Plus the main issue with mining bitcoin is keeping equipment cool. It always overheats for good reason. This is why the best bitcoin mining setups are those located in cold areas with access to renewal energy like ones near dams or geothermal energy like Iceland.

Siberia too. Bitcoin Mining outfits there benefit from the cold temps but also from the rich source of hydrogen gas of which Russia accounts for 48% of the world's supply.

Russia is basically the Saudi Arabia of Hydrogen gas.

So In the vacuum of space? Everything is cooled for free.

Try sticking your head out a space craft. see what happens! lol

It's exciting to think about the future. Even though I'll probably be dead before any of this actually ever happens. It is amazing to see how far we have come as a species in the past 100 years.

Think back to the year 1920. now imagine the year 2120?

I hope they bring back Elvis! lol

ArtemisProgram.com & ArtemisMission.com

A work in progress - it's live and undergoing further development with unique content and articles coming soon.

This is one of those unique situations where a bit of historical knowledge helps to hand register a great name!

I registered the domain when NASA first announced Project Artemis because I had a gut feeling they would change the name to Artemis Program because they did the same with Project Apollo - it later became known as the Apollo Program.

^ Likewise, with a bit of knowledge (and insight) I hand reg'd PlanetAtlas.com in 2006, three years before NASA's Kepler mission; the "exoplanet discovery machine", which to date has discovered the vast majority of the 3,400+ found exoplanets. (The web was around before the first exoplanet was discovered).

I remember when the existence of planets outside of our solar system (exoplanets) was pure sci-fi speculation!

Showing my age a bit, but it was such an exciting time during the early 70's when those first pictures of alien worlds were coming back from the surface of Mars, Venus, Mercury and then the fly-by images from the two Voyager missions to the outer planets.

It will likely be many hundreds if not thousands of years before we see images from the surfaces of the exoplanets. Utilising current technology the travel time to the closest (alpha Centauri B b) would be in excess of 6000 years, and the images would take 4.3 years to arrive back on Earth :(

What a great name you have there :)

I think that new technologies will negate the need to mine the Moon for certain elements and isotopes.
eg:
Tritium decays into helium-3 with a half-life of 12.3 years, so helium-3 can be produced by storing the tritium until it undergoes radioactive decay.

Yes, I think we'd all like to see Elvis again, but let's leave those other guys up there ;)

@360Promo
I'm confident quantum mechanics will have some travel apps. Until that time is parallel, the science-based artists' graphics & computer renderings of exoplanets -based on a broad, and growing, spectrum of mineral sigs, biomarkers, etc., will continue to serve well and awe-inspire.

In addition, we are reaching a tipping-point of people who understand a broken spaceship / planetary ecosystem becomes a domino-effect doomsday machine... so I don't think it will take a hundred years before we are a multi-planet species. Even if we have to build mini-planet rings around the earth, and moon, with asteroids.

Extraterrestrial TV.com goes well with PlanetAtlas.com... by putting (data based) faces to places, of course. And, AlienAvatar.com connects those images to users. 'Alien' images will also come from the oldest fossils on earth, crystals, as well, perhaps, from asteroids and planetesimals in space.

I also think 'CONTACT' via a quantum cyberspace medium is more likely than alien spacecraft arriving.

BTW, Extraterrestrial TV is an active 'Content Showcase Channel'... which gives prospects an idea what's happening in the space, while improving the domain's page rank and overall asset value. Beyond that its interesting, fun and there are biz ops along the way. The name was on my list for years before I reg'd it, in 2016, thinking things should start happening in this space... and they have, with US Gov video no less.
