With the exponential advancement in artificial intelligence, will .ai become the go to domain extension for AI applications? Quite possibly.

The extension has been around since 1995 and is the ccTLD for Anguilla and it is becoming more and more popular as further advancements are made in the artificial intelligence world. The extension, however, is not cheap to register at $283 for a 2 year minimum registration period so it can get pricy, quick... Especially if you are looking to bulk purchase and hold long term.

That being said, what are your thoughts? Do you own any .ai domains?
Showcase them here! Give a little insight as to why you picked them up and what your plans are.

I once had quite a few .AI domains and the registry was run by ONE single guy acting like a dictator, threatening to cancel my domains. Granted this was around 2006, you had to even pay a fee to "verify" your account. System was completely antiquated.

Still seems to be in place:

No, that fee is just to get an account and does not include a domain.

I highly recommend AVOIDING this extension.

YEs. 100 usd to create a id at whois.ai. if you reg many names ,100usd is good to buy a ID.
if you reg few,maybe you can use quyu.net or 101domain.com,120 usd to get a ai name for 2 years,not need to buy a id.

I think .ai will be very great,maybe only not better than com,but better than io co net org etc.

I had bought 500+ .ai names,and cost many dollars.

Startups are end users that buy the most domains across the board. When they're funded, startups will pay $10,000 to $90,000 without blinking an eye for the .io, .me, .co, or .tv they want.

IMO, .ai is next to experience those sales. If anyone disagrees, sell me your single tech word .ai domains cheaply.

600? Wow you regged alot of them. You must like the extension very much... I regged this name because I think it fit well. Aries God if war is well known. Many companies use this name. I personally thought it would pair well with Artificial Intelligence. Sort of like the terminator robot.. It would work well with games or robots or military weapons, anything badazz..because Aries is defiantly badazz..... etc.....

Still no EPP - but promised next month

If Vince isn't careful, and takes some serious steps to modernise the situation, dragging it kicking & screaming into the 90s, then someone's going to turn up with a big wad of cash, say "look at what happened to TV & IO", and take it away from him.

If the TLD is going to make real money, which I think it can, it has to come off island or the D/DoS alone will take out the entire island's internet - and the big registrars will never put up with the reliability & latency issues involved.

IO used to be run just like this (every new registration had to manually approved by one guy!), but after a new system went in, with decent bandwidth & fully RFC compliant EPP, registrations exploded.

I fear Vince's plans may have been significantly delayed since Anguilla was seriously torn apart by hurricane Irma (and then further by Maria).

I understand some of the reasons why Vince would want to keep the registry "on-island" as this ensures the revenue, jobs etc stay on-island. However, it seems to me there is a window of opportunity here to really push dot-AI ahead and that window will close, and the hurricane issue demonstrates the risks of keeping the critical infrastructure on-island.

If a TLD is going to significantly expand, it needs to be able to offer a robust, consistent & reliable service.

Before long Artificial Intelligence will cease to be a thing - not becuase we don't use it any more, but becuase it is so ubiquitous that we simply cease to refer to it as a thing, like electricity & sanitation.

An off-island registry system, run under British jurisdiction, fully EPP compliant with a signed zone & anycast DNS could give the island the opportunity to really push dot-AI forward while maintaining reasonable control, and I think it would be a shame to miss out on this golden opportunity.

I wish I could give you some special "inside" information, but sadly, I don't have an inside channel.

However, for ten years I was CTO at dot-IO, so I have some direct experience of helping island registries switch from a cottage industry style home-cooked registry system to a full EPP based private cloud system located in world-class hosting facilities in London.

If you've been in domains for that time, you will know the benefits IO has seen over that time. So you can understand the frustration I feel, as (from where I sit), it looks to me like AI has the same opportunity, but simply isn't grasping it.

... if anything the potential for AI is better than it was for IO, as there is a much more obvious, and high trending, meaning for AI than there was for IO

I prefer hard facts than inside information, I guess part of it too is Vince maybe doesn't want to release full control one of his babies the .ai registry too easily but he has a plethora of other project's going on, which work's in his favour - I think you are correct he maybe isn't grasping the urgency of the situation as there is a time window in place as AI & Deep learning is moving so fast. Seems like .AI has transitioned to a new registry back-end in the past three days during which whois has been unavailable.
Now whois is using standard format.
Though it seems like registration date got reset for all domains and every domain has 2017-12-16 as registration date. Maybe it'll be fixed sometime

From the FAQ Section at the Registry Site (whois.ai):

1. EPP/CoCCA migratiopn
   We have migrated many of the big users to EPP access. More than 3/4 of the domains on the first day. We expect in the next few days to have over 90% of the domains under direct EPP access. If you are a large user and would like EPP access send a request with EPP in the subject from the email account used for whois.ai login.
2. Login trouble Monday Dec 18 2017
   This site is still going through testing so we are not letting users login yet. This site will be back up soon for the legacy smaller users. Sorry for the trouble. We ask for your patience.
3. Whois service now at whois.nic.ai
   To lookup domains with the whois service use the new server with a command like whois -h whois.nic.ai foo.ai
   We are changing this with IANA.
4. What about new end users?
   The ".ai" registry had moved to using retail sites to sell the domains and only legacy users can login to this site. Here is a list of current retail regisrars.

So seems like they even were a bit early migrating their backend to EPP
