It is interesting and a curios novelty to me. There are still a ton of Three and Four character dot mobis out there to "create" your own brand able "short code" and .mobi site.

It seems like you would have to brand it either way. So why not just start with an applicable .mobi domain?

ShortCodeMobileDomains.mobi = SCMD.mobi...Available.

SanDiegoCalifornia.mobi = SDCA.mobi...coming soon!

I have heard of Short Codes before, those are the short numbers that you text to get ringtones and to vote and stuff. Like "text hello to 66454 for whatever ringtone". You see it on TV everyday. I have never heard of Shot Codes before though, but it seems like QR codes.

Text WHODEM1 to 74415 to buy the ringtone now.

74415 <- Shortcode that directs to the proper server and gateway via the carriers for billing and/or providing info back to the users phone. Dedicated short-codes cost upwards of over $1000+ per month.

Think jamster. Most large corporations do not own the .mobi version of their shortcode. Here is a good example:

Yahoo owns the shortcode 92500. 92500.mobi is available.

Michael :)

shotcodes (without the "r" in it) appears to be a barcode phone scanning thing just like QR codes in asia. Seems interesting and a lot of big companies are starting to use it from what their website says.

I like it and definitely see applications for the use. I can not imagine the cost for this technology. They do not give any inidication of the pricing for commercial advertising. It has got to be enormous in comparison to a PPC.

I think this technology along with "paying" for items with a phone as a credit card is quite incredible and perhaps where all the future of e-commerce is heading from a consumer standpoint (C2B). I would imagine all of this technology and usage fees will decrease in price dramatically as more and more come on board.

This would be applicable to the "mobile" society as shown in the promo if that technology is commonplace. But for those not buying into it (yet), stand alone websites is still mainstream.

My first post was there STILL needs to be a website and was referring to the "short code" or shortening of URL's not being a necessity for the .mobi extension. Way too many available yet.

Have you signed up for a personal account? If so, how will you use it? What will you use it for?

Gemulder,
It appears that that the service "www.shotcodes.com" provides hotlinking to resources that enable phones to receive content. This could be a big boom for DotMobi. I could see this service providing the following services for a well-designed DotMobi site:

1. DotMobi Website Service: Ringtones & Downloadable music.
Use Shotcodes to direct users from a billboard, magazine, student newspaper, etc. to get ringtones, local bands, and new artist music from the DotMobi website.

2. DotMobi Website Service: Listing of fast food restaurants across metro areas.
Use Shotcodes to direct users to directories on the DotMobi site of restaurants in their area with specials and coupons from those places.

3. DotMobi Website Service: Travel service listing of airlines and vacation packages.
Use Shotcodes involving travel specials on Billboards and Signs. User connects to the DotMobi site via Shotcodes and gets a travel special description with 800 numbers and special discounts if they act upon the ad immediately.

4. DotMobi Website Service: Taxi Services and City Transportation services.
Use Shotcodes to direct users on the street or in a restaurant to the corresponding DotMobi site and be able to reach a cab service in that area or find out directions to closes metro transportation station.

NOTE: All of the users that are directed to the DotMobi site will also see ads and banners on that same site which would then increase hit rates for those ads.

I am sure you can use your imagination for more ideas Gemulder

Very good points you mentioned, but I have a strong feeling there has to be a unique opportunity for .mobi in it... think, think, think!

I've been wondering when this would spill over into the mobile market. Mykel, you are definitely ahead of the curve.

.mobi itself IS the unique opportunity that all these business have available to provide an easily remembered, guaranteed working website to their customers and prospects.

As someone mentioned, there have been several of these code-reading-schemes (i.e., the positive meaning of the word schemes = platforms) in the works for a few years now. Forbes magazine sent out the "cue cat" to subscribers (a mouse-like, cat-shaped scanner) a couple years ago to take readers scanning barcodes in their magazines to an advertiser's website; Qode from Neomedia has been languishing in the works for years, attempting to use cellphone reading of barcodes to website, etc, etc. The barcode standards and technology have been evolving, the cellphone cameras and software are maturing and becoming more widespread, and the development of small-screen friendly mobile web pages has been lagging, forcing the other two technologies into a kind of a limbo. The basic tools and technologies are in place, development of basic to rich mobile content is sorely needed, and it will all move forward, eventually.

Dot Mobi can have itself a nice place in this mix.

Ditto: this is what I was eluding to earlier. Such wonderful technology is still not commonplace and I am sure expensive. What was the guy using? A mobile phone.

There is the reality. The website only mentions one (jameson whiskey) going live. There must be an embedded code to be recognized. I think it is fascinating and definitely way ahead of its time. It could potentially revolutionize the advertising industry and I will study it and look for investment opportunities. Imagine signs, ads, billboards, buses, taxis all carrying this technology...years away.

In the meantime, I am walking down the street at Times Square and have my mobile phone and I want directions and perhaps tickets to a Broadway show or maybe even a Yankees game but before I dump some money into tickets for an outdoor event I want to know the weather... And in order to get my way I have to take my wife to a nice restaurant and shopping...

Here comes another shameless .mobi plug for boroughs.mobi and en-route.mobi.

a mouse-like, cat-shaped scanner
YOU DID NOT BRING THAT UP!!!

It was more like 10 years ago, I think I ended up getting 3-5 sent to me, mostly from wired magazine when I signed up and then every one started send them out. Probably late 20th century icons and geeky collectibles. I bet if I looked hard enough I may still find on laying around...unused in the original packaging. But I also bet I don't want to look hard enough for one.

shotcodes are one of many uses of barcoding and cellphones

shotcodes are basically just another barcode that allows for a much larger data storage in the code itself ...plus ....it can be read by the built-in camera phone

look for the cellphone as a major tool of customer feedback and information

shotcodes allow you to take a picture of a code with a digital camera and then be connected to a web site for ticket purchases, discounts, coupons, travel information...anything you want

this will be huge ....

one of many reasons why the cellphone will turn in to the urban swiss army knife for information
