How do you go about setting up your own web server at home?

I know I will need a fixed IP and a broadband Internet connection. Let's say I have both: I have got my broandband connection and a fixed IP from my ISP.

I have also got my apache running on my web server. Now, how do I hook up my web server to the Internet?

Depends, are you behind a router? If so you will need to foward requests to your ip on port 80 ( or whatever port you have the server running on) to the computer running the server. If your not behind a router or anything, simply typing in your ip should work. or ip and port if not on port 80.

I am not sure if I am behind a router or not. But this device that I use to go online - could be a rounter or a modem. How do I check?

What's your device called? Post the name of it or do a google search for it.

The device has "Prolink Hurricane 9000W" on it :)
It has wireless capability also - two antennas :)

I followed the instructions in the page. I believe I will have to forward port 80, for http. I have apache running on my computer. I can see the page using localhost/bla

But, when I try to access it using the public ip: xx.xx.xx.xxx/bla, I get the following error:

Web Server Error Report:
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Server Error: 501 Not Implemented

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
No RPM for this combination of URL and method
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
/bla/index.php

Also, when I browse to the public ip, I can see the router configuration page! Isn't this a security issue?

Yes, Apache, PHP and MySQL is running fine on my computer. I can see the website using localhost, e.g. http://localhost/bla/

I have also turned off the firewall. But funny, why the error says "No RPM for this combination of URL and method" - RPM = redhat package manager??

Found this http://www.experts-exchange.com/Networking/Q_21169435.html

Problem is I cannot find a function in the router to move the web interface (of the router) to an alternative port, for example port 8000. (this time I am checking this on another router - Aztech)

cant you switch the web interface off for external connections? that way people viewing your webserver will see your website rather than the http router configuration page.

How do I put this server on the Internet to let others access it?

if you install a webserver locally on your machine, add your external (Internet IP) to the Active WebServer list..
This should enable outsiders access your webserver.

You will have to configure/take care about securing your box on your own.

Ok I have had same problems before. First the when you access your site using external ip and see the router control panel that is a port issue. See the remote management of the router uses a port. In mine I go to that area and tell it to use another ip because the default on is like prot 80 witch is same as apache. Secound you do need to setup port forwarding and if you can't get that to work try DMZ zone last. And then it should work fine. I can help if you need more help thanks.
