Hi everyone:

I have been working on SEO for a few of our websites over the years and have had great sucess. One of our websites has been on the first page of Google for some very competitive keywords for a long time. For our best keyword we have been in the number 3 spot on Google for many many months. Lately, I have seen it drop to 5 or 6 and then back up to 3 or 4 but it keeops changing. Then, 2 days ago it went to 8, then back to 6, now it is at number 7 spot. I have never seen so much fluctuation ever. It changes daily. Is there something going on with Google that I am not aware of?

This site is number three for allinanchor for this keyword. It should be higher than number 7.

Thanks for the help,

Scott

SERP tends to change daily.

the validity of Google rank seems to be dropping by the month, shifting of possition could possibly been seen as a good thing, in at least that google are paying attention

If SERP remain constant - no need to do SEO :D

Daily?
How about hourly?

I've seen one of my domain on #6 in the morning and #4 few hours later.
Currently, it's on #2

There is no permanent SERP. For particular query it all depends on which Google servers are responding, what are browser and ISP settings of searcher, also geotargeting. There are continuous changes in competitors onpage and offpage factors, someone changes hosting provider, someone gets and someone looses valuable backlink, adds content on their pages or makes other changes. Considering current updates is just much faster today than it was years ago. Google also updates somewhat their semantics and ranking formulas, they often do some tests for changes in development. Are you sure that none of competitors above and below your position hasn`t changed anything? I have impression for example that last time many sites that are "technically" poorly optimized have gained much better SERP compared to "well optimized" competitors.
