I know there may be no answer to this but let me briefly explain:

We own several websites that rank very well on Google and Yahoo. In fact, for some of our most important keywords we come up on page one and two.

However, one of our websites was ranking # 3 for a key term. This is an important keyword for us. When I go to google.com and search this we now come up number 5 today and then at times number 6. We rank number 2 for allinanchor.

My question is:

Why would we be dropping even though are allinanchor and inbound links have increased? We are making sure that our anchor links are not all the same so this shouldn't be an issue.

Thanks for your help,
Scott

You are right there is no answer to this.

I think only the inventor of the google algo can answer it correctly.

But yes there is a solution for it and the solution is that just get more backlinks :xf.love:

Just a thought, maybe your competitors are doing SEO as well?

Competition is also major factor that you should look at as what ^ he said.

Some of your inbound links may have been revauled or even devauled due to a tweak in the algorithm

I'd have to agree, Google makes changes to it's algorithm all the time. Remember, backlinks w/anchor text aren't the only factor in search results.

The web is dynamic. Things are constantly moving, changing and being updated. So the serps will be reflecting those changes. It could also be possible that you sit on your hands and watch your spot climb in google for no apparent reason then start doing some SEO and watching it fall.

Just stick with what you know to work and keep at it!

Nothing is in black & white. You need to experiment and stick to what is working.

But remember that Google is subject to change without notice.

:bingo: Your competition plays a major factor. could be that they saw you gaining ground on them and did a lot of linking too.

Unstable rankings are either due to their algo updates or your competition getting more solid backlinks and/or their doing good onpage stuff. IMO

In such situation, I would create a smart link bait and do it aggressively. This will take care of it. Most probably.
