Sedo 'squeeze' bay be deal killer.

I received an offer on a .cc via Sedo. I thought the offer was fair but when I saw that Sedo is taking 100 bucks instead of 50 I fear the extra 50 I had to add to my counter may be a deal killer. :(

they take 10% of minimum $50 that's if the page is NOT parked there.... so if indeed it's $1000 you'll be pocketing $900 which IMHO not bad at all for .cc

Hi maroulis,

If you are selling a .cc through Sedo then they do charge extra ( if it is $1k or above it does not make a difference, but if it is less it can add up ). Their charges are :

.com/.net/.org/.info/.biz/.us/.name/.li/
.be/.dk/.de/.at/.ch/.tv/.ws/.mx 10% of the sales price
[ minimum 50โ‚ฌ / 50ยฃ / 50$ยน ]

.co.uk/.fr/.es/.cc/.ca/.se/.pl 10% of the sales price
[ minimum 100โ‚ฌ / 100ยฃ / 100$ ]

other domains 10% of the sales price
[ minimum 150โ‚ฌ / 150ยฃ / 150$ ]

All the best.

Richard

Sedo doesn't make their fees a secret.
If you don't like the rules list somewhere else.

Are you able to park it there and ask the bidder to come back after a week?

maybe certain extension statistically do not provide enough parking revenue, thus it is more expensive to park/sell.

There is some good news. I was told by 2 different SEDO reps that rates for some extensions in the "other" category will be coming down soon. For example, the rates for Indian domains .IN and .CO.IN are definitely planned to be lowered.

I got interested in the topic when a recent $200 .IN sale left my relative with only $50 after their $150 commission was subtracted from it.

By the way, all SEDO reps I've encountered have been courteous, honest and helpful.

Getting 50 bucks and only clearing 30-40 is tough on a 200 sale unless you can move a lot of them.

In my case I would have been a $10 looser on the offer. Had the commission been $50 we would have already had a deal but thats life in the 'slow lane'. Is tough because for this name low xxx IMHO is about right.

It sure did kill it!!

The history--
110 offer, I counter at 190. they counter 130, I counter 150 and they cancel.

If the commission had been 50 bucks I know that 130 would have been a deal and very posible I would have accepted the 110 offer.

Oh well thats life...

The .be fees are really generous, a flat 10% fee.

:bingo: Hark,

I cannot believe they hold such high fees on low ball sales... Surely, it costs them nothing to cronjob the emails back and forth so why lose sale after sale..

They have lost a least 20 commission deals from me (and I likewise have lost out on a sale) because the buyer makes a reasonable offer which if theyd had the brains to contact me directly i would have agreed to. But when they are charging $150 on a $160 deal Im not interested in $10 when they get $150, its ridiculous... What other business in the world would be so stupid to do likewise..??

It's worth a shot, and I will tell you why I say that.

After our situation described above ($200 .IN sale to net only $50) they sent my relative an additional $100, giving him a total of $150. They earned a little extra respect from both of us, because they did not have to do it.

I should point out there were other factors involved, and we both contend their site interface told us different amounts about the original commission rate, but we could not really prove it. They took the situation at face value, and despite having us on the hook (commission terms contract) they sent out a prompt extra payment to us. That took the sting out of my relative's sale, and it impressed me with SEDO overall, because it indicates there is a real peson somewhere, with a heart.

All that aside, I think they realize now the commissions on some of the "other" class extensions like .IN are not proper, and that nobody can successfully sell under those conditions. It should be acknowledged that some of the other/exotic extensions require a fair amount of effort and paperwork to transfer, and the transactions can become very involved, so those higher commission rates were set up with that in mind. Of course, since we know that .IN/.CO.IN domains are easy to deal with, they should naturally be removed.

And .SC too. I just saw Badger and that reminds me.

By the way, I've never owned a .CC domain. Are they difficult to transfer etc? Maybe we can get them removed from the higher commission rates too.

.cc's are among the easiest to transfer, in my experience (Verisign managed, etc.).

If a buyer is a domain professional, even a semi-pro or semi-serious-hobbyist, then they know about Sedo fees and wouldn't even bother offering $100 - $200 on Sedo for any of those extensions. Let that also be a reminder to the rest of us that offers on .cc's and similar should be done through whois contacts, rather than Sedo's offer service. But let that also remind us of the importance of actually checking your whois emails for offers, and perhaps including a line in your whois indicating that offers are accepted through email as well :)
