Hi Guys
I dont generally sell domains via Sedo but today I received an offer of around $350 for a domain.

With your past experience would you..

1) Push this to a 5 day auction and hope to start a bididng war

or

2) Counter the offer as Im pretty sure they could go higher

I dont accept first offers bt principle

Hard to say without knowing the domain name. Perhaps you can get a better price through negotiation B-)

Push to auction if you are willing to sell it at minimum $350, if no other bidders show interest. Counter-offer higher if you are willing to risk a 'no sale'.

Good luck.

It depends on what you paid to acquire the name.

How long has it been with you?

If I were in your shoes, I will accept the price as sell it off,

20,000 exact monthly searches
0.60$ ppc revenue
high competition

I suspect best price would be $1200

Maybe counter would be better

Without knowing the name it is difficult, however I almost always Counter offer with a reasonable amount.

How long has it been Parked? Does it fall into Sedo minimum commission ? Leaving you with a fraction of that amount. I would counter or at least try to get buyer to absorb sedo commission .

If not parked with sedo and a lot of other loop-holes you will pay high commission.

Does that bother you?

There is always a risk that the buyer will walk aware from a counter offer and the sale will be lost. The only question is are you happy with that risk?

If not, then don't counter, either accept the offer or send to auction although I have lost sales with this method also.

Determine a fair value that you are happy with (the minimum you want for the name) and base this as a starting point for your negotiations. Anything less than this amount, counter or walk away.

Good Luck.

The sedo commission is around $100. This eats into the sale price.

Its been parked a couple of years.

Jason. I dont mind if I lose the sale. Id rather get the best price and wait personally. Id be happy with $800 or higher.

First offer I had on this domain was $100 so would only cover sedos fees...I countered too high in this instance at $1500. So lost sale.

It could be a tyre kicker wanting to buy at a bargain then resell for a profit.. or it could be a company with a large budget. Unfortunately I dont know this info.

Also its an adult related domain niche

you've done right, if you are happy with 800+ then go for it, it's better than undersell

Have the offers been from different people, or is it possible they are the same person?

In SEDO, you can click "Information about the Buyer" -- this will give you general info like the buyer's Country and also the Buyer Index and year since SEDO Member. If they are all different, then it's probably offers from different people. But if they are all identical for all your offers on this domain, then it's a potential it is the same person.

If it's the same person, then you can plan your strategy better... (i.e. if it's the same person making multiple offers on one of my domains, then I know they want it...)

Regards,
DN

I would cancel negotiations, delete the domain from Sedo and put up a landing page with your contact form.

When the buyer contacts you, close the deal through escrow for the $1200 that you want.

Nice tactic. Could well be a solution.
Only downside I guess is that you are only relying on type in traffic then for future offers.

If your Sedo buyer wants your name he'll follow up with you. He may not pay your price, but at least you'll know who he is and can use that down the road.

If you counter at Sedo and he walks you have nothing. Push to auction and you have $350 minus $100 commission.

As for future buyers, if they really want your domain, they will type in your domain and see what's there. If they aren't willing to do that, they likely aren't going to offer much anyways, but, I guess you might lose out on some offers from 'browsers'.

m-i-k-e gave you a good advice.

Or, since you mentioned you dont mind to loose the sale, counter on $950 with Sedo note "this is my final offer". You can also investigate Sedo buyer. If he has high buyer history then he is probably domainer. If there is no buyer history, it could be an end user and he/she/them might accept your price of $950. Maybe he/she/them would go higher than $1000 since his/her/their initial offer was $350, but you should not be greedy in domaining. This is just one domain, and there are millions of other domains, with tons of potential buyers :)

Because of the discrepancy between the buyers offer and your asking price, I would not push it to auction. For me, all the domains I've pushed to auction at Sedo haven't resulted in much higher prices. (Of course there could be many reason for this). And I haven't pushed many to auction, preferring to counter offer. I wouldn't be shy in countering at $1250. which gives you a little wiggle room if they are serious buyers and want to counter back.

I also think the real question is, "Am I going to regret not accepting the initial offer?" As others have said, it is difficult to say without knowing name. But, I had a similar offer on SEDO for a .NET I had hand-registered. My dilemma was the same as yours. I decided to push it to auction. Result: Just one bid... Sold for $300. I should not have sent it to auction for the following reasons: One of the words in the name was in Portuguese and looked as a typo in the eyes of the English-reader. I should have made a counter-offer since I was not in a desperate need to sell.

It was FilmesDownload.net. So you should consider if your name means something to a considerable number of SEDO visitors. In any event, my regret was not that deep, since, as I have said, it was a hand-registered .NET for which I had not received a previous offer.

I countered at $1450 and not long after the buyer has offered me just under $500. hmmmm... it seems that we have a fish here thats eager for this domain. With sedo commisson I would lose $75 of this.

To add to this it seems the user is a new user to sedo. They only registered in december. Perhaps we have an end user here..

Now should I have some balls here and re-counter.

I think YOU knowing YOUR price is the main thing. I mean we buy these things, we should know what they are worth, or at least what we want for it. Of course as domain owner we have the right just to keep it too.

Least the name is getting good interest.
