Sedo, the domain brokerage and parking company, has acquired GreatDomains from VeriSign, and plans to remake the site and hold monthly auctions for domains premium names. Back in the dot-com boom, GreatDomains was big place for buying and selling big-money domains. It's importance has diminished in recent years, so Sedo decided to grab the brand. Matt Bentley, the chief strategy officer for Sedo, would only tell me that it was a "multi-million dollar" deal.
"We're trying to bring back some of the glamor and excitement," Bentley said.
The site officially launched today, but there isn't much to it yet. Bentley said the plan is to hold a 7-day anonymous auction every month. The idea came from the success of auctions at TRAFFIC, one the domain industry's biggest conferences. Traffic, which is going on this week in New York, ends each conference with a live auction run by Moniker.
