Wondering if keyword searches in search engines include extension.

For example, if someone searches "baseball info" would baseballinfo.com or baseball.info have the best potential to be ranked at the top of the list (assuming both pages have the same content)?

Some have suggested that this might work for logical TLD like .com, .net, .info, and .biz. The same people have suggested that for extensions such as .md you are essentially adding "moldova" to the keyword of your domain. So a search for "baltimore md" wouldn't be great for baltimore.md because the site you own is actually baltimore.maldova based on search engine preference.

Sorry for the longwinded question... hope you all understand what I'm getting at.

IMO, I would consider baseballinfo.com, cos it contains all the relevant keywords and the TLD, whihc gives a higher rank than the other one.

I suppose baseballinfo.com would be ranked higher than baseball.info when searching with keywords "baseball info". I don't think the domain extension matters in the ranking, it's the keywords that more importantly determine the ranking.

Irish, if you list down a few examples, would make it understandable and simpler.

Hi Achacko,

Not quite sure what you are looking for, but if it's to understand the importance of backlinks, Damion summed it up pretty well...

In summary backlinks are very important since these are the votes from the internet how popular a site should be regarded.
Backlinks are links from other sites that lead to your site. Usually, the more you have, the higher your rankings. Ideally these backlinks will be text links that use keywords that are relevant to your site.

An example of a keyword rich text link/backlink from one of my sites to Namepros might be,
Buy, Sell, and Learn about Domain Names ( keywords are: Buy, Sell, & Domain/Domain Name)

Or to Google, Search Engine ( keyword phrase is: Search Engine)

Or a non-keyword rich link might simply be, Google.com or Google

A good place to start is with the many free directories that will accept a link to your site. Just make sure the site/directory uses direct links (just YOUR domain shows down in the status bar when you hover over the link) and try to mix up your link title so that they aren't all the same by using a variety of words that are relevant to your site's topic.

Example, if this was 15 years ago and I owned Monster.com, had no advertising budget (hahahaa...) and wanted to post my site in directories or on other sites to build up my traffic, I might do something like:
Search for a New Job ( keywords are: Search, New & Job)
Find a Job ( keywords are: Find & Job)
Biggest Job Board Anywhere ( keyword phrase is: Job Board)

You also get "extra credit" from the SE's (at least with Google) if the backlink site has the same topic as your site, or if the site is considered a "site of importance" such as a government site or a university website.

The days of high rankings solely because of your domain name are long gone. Consider it MUCH less important than backlinks and content, lots and lots of keyword rich content - but not TOO keyword rich otherwise it will be looked at by the SE's as keyword spamming and you'll be dinged for it...

An on target domain name is just one more thing that helps attract the end user when they see it listed someplace. The backlinks and content gets the attention of the Search Engines and convinces them to give you better ranking. (You may have noticed that the word "Monster" has NOTHING to do with jobs yet it is the most important job site out there - at least in the U.S. - and is number one on Google for the search term "JOB").

Hope this helps.

(By the way, I know I'm not Irish but I thought I try to help out anyways...)
