I have a chap from Saw.com ringing me, twice, very interested in marketing LondonHotel.com
I mentioned I don't really want an exclusive arrangement but the agreement he sent requests this

He saying all the right things to me "we think its worth a lot more" etc
but exclusive agreement probably means a longer haul (months years) doesn't it

Can you help me weigh up the pros and cons please?

Would love @bmugford to participate

For starters, you can simply ask him how long he requires the listing to remain exclusive.

Gather all the data possible to make an informed decision.

Also interesting that they are coming to you, as there are plenty of good names out there. Clarify the good-faith intent of the parties within the proposed contract.

Good luck!

Sounds to me like he might just already have a buyer or is close to it. Why not give it a chance for a few months?

An exclusive agreement means only one party has the right to market the domain for a set period. It can lead to more focused effort and serious buyers, but it also limits exposure to other brokers and may extend the selling time if the broker is not highly active. A non-exclusive setup gives you more flexibility and wider reach, but often less commitment from any single broker. The decision depends on your confidence in the broker’s real performance, not just valuation claims.

Great question.

At Saw.com, we ask for exclusivity when we are providing services beyond simply listing a domain on our marketplace.

That can include our research team identifying potential buyers, building targeted outreach lists, contacting companies, founders, startups, investors, VCs, and other relevant prospects, preparing marketing materials, issuing press releases, promoting the domain on social media, attending relevant conferences, and featuring it across other channels where we believe the right buyer may see it.

It takes time and costs money to do all that.

While raising awareness, buyers do not always come back through the broker. Some may try to contact the owner directly or hire their own representative to go directly. If we are investing our team’s time and resources into creating demand, we need some protection that allows us to properly represent the asset and recover that investment if a buyer is generated from the campaign.

Months may sound long, but for a meaningful domain sale, especially one that requires outbound research, negotiation, and education of the market, it is a reasonable period of time. Companies take time to make decisions. It also takes time to find the right people at large companies. Especially in the summer!

Make sure you are on the same page with your broker, and make a plan that works best for you. Set the right expectations for the time frame, how often you want to hear from him, and whether you have other leads you worked on or never responded to. Then share them. Share whatever you communicated in response to these inquiries so we are not surprised by conflicting information during a big meeting.

Hopefully, you and Darryl can make a plan you are comfortable with, and you'll give us a chance to sell your name. We are looking forward to it.

Thank you for the opportunity!
