If I wanted to set up a website for someone, and then have them be able to update/modify it from a different computer..how would I go about doing this without using a site such as Tripod? Or is this a stupid question and you can actually host a site with its own domain and be able to go to another site to modify it?

Well that's what file managers and FTP is for. If you're going to do websites then I'd recommend that you get cozy with FTP software, as it makes updating websites quick and easy. Here are some helpful links about FTP:

Smart FTP Software

File managers are a little more simpler but it depends upon if your host offers this or not. It's pretty much standard with most control panels these days though. Both could be accessed via another computer (with FTP you'd have to install the software if you used a client).

So say I have a domain name..So would I then go to a webhosting site and buy a plan, and then link it to my domain? And then I would go to the webhosting site to edit my domain?

Yes, you buy the plan. But you must point your domain to their nameservers after they have created the account for you. Your web host will give you the information to that. To edit your site, your host should provide an online control panel so that you can edit, change, view statistics no matter what computer you are on. In cPanel, to change the html or edit the web pages you can do that in File Manager.

You go and purchase the plan and you'd be given nameservers (ns1.domain.com and ns2.domain.com). You'd then login to where you have your domain registered and point your website to these nameservers. (Think of nameservers as the "dock" for your website.)

From there you'd be able to login to domain.com/controlpanel and edit your website. If you use the FTP method then your host would provide you with the correct FTP server to login to (such as domain.com or ftp.domain.com).

Gotchya. So do you create the site in your webhost account with all the data?

You can create it there. But most people use dreamweaver, golive, and photoshop to make their sites. If you just want to code it yourself in File Manager than that is your choice.
