Romney Vows To donate Salary if elected

I know a few eleceted officials have done this. I know former Los Angeles Mayor Richard Riordan only took $1 year. And I do believe that a former US President in the early 1900's did this as well or I think he donated it to charity.

So what do you think? If a US President is well off or comfortable financially, should they donate salary?

Whether or not it is a publicity stunt or not. Like I stated there has been other elected officials who said they would donate their salaries and I do believe Riodan stated he would before being elected. And he was mayor of Los Angeles from 1993 - 2001. So he wasnt just in for 1 term. For the entire 8 years he only received $8. And he is a Republican as well.

Arnold Schwarzenegger current Govenor is doing the same. Donating his salary to charity. And I do believe he is in his 2nd term.

Both George Washington and John Kennedy refused to be paid as US presidents as well.

So donating or refusal to be paid is not very uncommon now a days.

Also, people usually donate or give what they have enough of . A good example is good in the US. AMericans often donate food because they have excess supplies in their pantry, fridge, and it wouldn't take too much to get rid of extra. it seems Mitt ROmney is a cash cow. Donating that average a salary for a man of such wealth is not that spectalar a gesture.

i don't think that anybody should be obligated to donate their salary (president or not), but if they really are well off, then it would be nice to see them do this. i might even go as far to say that the donation(s) are good regardless of intent, since the amounts being donated are quite large.

Yup that is a nice hunk of change for a US president. $400,000 per year times 4. $1,600,000 total.

With Romney worth $250 million, a $400,000 salary isn't alot to donate.. I'd be more impressed to see him cough up lots more toward some nice social programs

Still, it's a nice gesture and I welcome it as such..

I agree that donating your salary is admirable, but during an election, it is just an obvious and desperate attempt to appeal to our hearts and not our heads.

Actually he does within his church. I am not sure about outside, but I am sure he does.
He pays a 10% tithe to his church. And not counting any humanitarian or fast offering tithes. Which both in part aid those who are in need. Some of those monies that are tithed helped Katrina victums. Those who were hit by the numerous hurricanes, floods, tornados within the Eastern part of the US. Including the Tsunami a few years back. Some of the money also helps make the gruel that are fed to the refugees in the refugee camps in Africa. All the money used is used directly for the feeding and or assitance to those in need. There is no administration fees and or costs. So 100% of the tithed money goes directly to charities et cetera.

Like said earlier it is not uncommon for those who are well off to donate their salaries and Romney is not the first to come up with the idea. So I feel it would be a wee bit early to call it a ploy to get votes.

Washington, Kennedy, Riordan and Arnold all had done it.
