Yet Dr Paul Mockapetris, inventor of the net's Domain Name System (DNS), entertains few illusions about the longevity of his creation.

The guy is an idiot. I don't care that he invented DNS to begin with. He doesn't say HOW DNS would be replaced. He only mentions it will need to evolve..which is the only true thing he stated. DNS will need to evolve and the authority will have to change. However DNS might become DNS2 or whatever...it's not a big deal. That article is crap.

You could give someone 100 Billion and they couldn't stop people from typing in domain names. It's the biggest change in our lifetimes and it will take an equally bigger change to get rid of it. Odds are a trillion to one that it can be done at this point.

Things evolve over time and I have to say this article doesn't put anything forward that hasn't already been speculated at this point. It's logical that things evolve overtime but I think we should put aside the speculation. I don't quite see any reason to fix somethin' that ain't broke.

I don't see this happening for quite sometime. Actually, I would speculate that DNS will remain mostly the same until we start working with direct neural interfaces.
