Responding to a buyer via email

Ok, I have a potential end user for one of my domains. I've been going back and forth on this for a long time now....do you respond to a buyer that asks how much do you want for a name with a short answer such as "$5,000" or do you put a short sentence together describing why the price is what it is?

Has anyone seen more success one way or another?

Thanks

Eric

I would guess that any explanation would prob help you justify your asking price.

I totally agree. I have found that some domainers answer as you say, just with a dollar amount, even without a word. I find that rude and unhelpful.

The modest $XXX and $X,XXX I have made have been marked by a polite tone and the response alway starts with a "Thank you for your interest in the domain name______."

Thank you, that's exactly what I've been doing.

As what Jack Sparrow would say: "Domainers, mate!" LOL

So how do you explain your price tag?

There are too many scam buyers that offering their aprisal business sites.
You should respond with your contact details and to discuss everything by phone or meeting. The buyer should verify he is a real person, ask for their personal website , and all the information he may provide.

The issue is not whether he is a real buyer or a scammer, I already know he is the owner of a big software company. The question is "what is the best way to respond to his inquiry?".

I receive scam emails all the time, I know what those emails look like.

Negotiiate the best price

Just because the potential buyer may have money does not mean he or she is going to spend that money on your domain name.

Like any negotiation, you should always ask the buyer to offer a price first. While you do your research, find out the prices of similar domain names that have been sold recently, and explain to the buyer why your domain name is worth the asking price.

If the buyer really want the name, he or she will negotiate.

I try to be realisic with my prices and in doing so I try to make it sound like an investment not just a domain name. I also back-up my asking price with metrics and sales history and at the end let them know that I am always willing to negotiate.

Now for another question. After sending my response, how long do you typically wait for them to respond before you email them back?

Much depends on the certain case. Sometimes people are willing to have some time, but also they have to understand your time is not waiting for too long.

If you were on the other end of the negotiations, what sort of a response would you like to receive? Be guided by that.

Thats a great way to think about it and after reading my response, I feel very good about my approach and I'll give him a few days to digest it.
