So I was sipping coffee at my favorite local diner this morning, and I was thinking about some of my earliest experiences with domain registration (see, coffee's not my only addiction!). Anyway, I digress...

Remember the days when you'd find a hosting company, and their instructions were: "Let us know what you'd like to have as a domain name. And please list a second and third choice just in case the first one is already taken".

Checking a 'whois' database yourself was uncommon at the time... you just assumed the name you wanted was probably available and in many cases it was. And when it was not available, the hosting company would simply use your #2 or #3 choice!

Ha! Those were the days... Today, if not for easily accessible 'whois' databases, you'd need a list of 1,000 choices to send to your hosting company :)

definately what the good old days were like..*sigh* I think it only happened once or twice that I actually didn't get the domain name I wanted. However, if I could, I would go back and do a couple of things different :hehe:

Yea... for many folks on these boards, the "good 'ol days" will be: "Remember when we had to have domain names"? Heh

When it comes to registering domain names I would have done alot of things
different. Like registering a whole bunch of 3 letter dot com's

I remember....

When catching expired names was less complicated, and more fair.

Before registrars started their own auction sites, made exclusive deals giving one company an advantage over the others, when most drop catchers operated on a true first come first serve basis, and when the little guy with $50 had just as good odds as the big guy with 50K.

Those were the days!
