So I was sipping coffee at my favorite local diner this morning, and I was thinking about some of my earliest experiences with domain registration (see, coffee's not my only addiction!). Anyway, I digress...
Remember the days when you'd find a hosting company, and their instructions were: "Let us know what you'd like to have as a domain name. And please list a second and third choice just in case the first one is already taken".
Checking a 'whois' database yourself was uncommon at the time... you just assumed the name you wanted was probably available and in many cases it was. And when it was not available, the hosting company would simply use your #2 or #3 choice!
Ha! Those were the days... Today, if not for easily accessible 'whois' databases, you'd need a list of 1,000 choices to send to your hosting company
