Registry Fees

Some UK registrars give a breakdown of the price of a £7.99 domain from them, and say that £7.90 goes in registry fees and 9p is profit to them.

Other registrars charge less than half that for a domain (this is for .coms).

What's going on?

Different TLDs have different registry fees.

It costs registrars $6.25 to register a domain. $6.00 goes to VeriSign and $0.25 goes to ICANN.

All the prices are for .coms.

Either:

(1) The UK registrars are lying about the registry fees they pay.
(2) The other registrars are selling at a loss (unlikely).
or
(3) Different registrars pay different registry fees.

Just wondered which explanation is correct.

Are they a direct registrar or a reseller? If a reseller, then their price could be artificially set by whoever they are reselling under. Just a thought.

Sorry, I thought that you were talking about .co.uk domains at that price.

All ICANN accredited registrars pay only $6.25 for .COM domains. As akrasia said, they may be a reseller receiving highly inflated pricing, however this is unlikely. To be honest, I think that they are lying about the fees.

If you could provide the actual site, I may be able to give you an exact answer.

Heart Internet are one of the registars claiming this level of expense, but a Google search turns up others.

It looks like they're a Tucows reseller. They don't publicly advertise reseller pricing, so it's impossible to know whether Heart Internet is actually receiving that rate.

Could the Tucows rate really be that high? Remember that's £7.90, not $7.90!

The cost for a .uk domain is £5.00 excl VAT if the registrar is member of Nominet. If not then it's £80 :yell:
There are various additional yearly fees on top of that.

Wondering if anyone has an overview of the reg fees for the various TLDs (or their ranges). Off the top of my head, certain ones like .INFO and .CN can drop below $1 per.

yeah! some registrars sell at a loss (example: Yahoo 1.99 offer)

I'm still confused about the true price of a .com domain name.

Registrars can sell at a loss, because when you have to renew, they charge you a lot more.

or we can transfer the domain to another registrar. i ordered a domain from ipower 1.99 offer but unfortunately my credit card was billed $6.xx (i just ignored because i don't want to risk my domain), so we have to be cautious when picking up deals :)

Asianinvasion already gave 2 answers. And that's not considering how much
goes into overhead, salaries, merchant fees, etc.

Perhaps I'm dense, but I don't see what's the problem here. You've got other
choices.

There may not be one.

If, however, registrars are giving misleading information about the registry fees they pay, then that's false advertising.

Someone who believed on the basis of the false claim that £7.99 was as cheap as it was possible to get domain names, bought a hundred domains at £7.99, and then discovered that they could have bought them elsewhere for less than half the price might justifiably feel aggrieved. They might even have a case for compensation.

If they really are paying £7.90 in fees, though, then that raises another question: why?
