"Premium" started off as a term investors used to distinguish good domains from bad domains, and it was later adopted by aftermarket platforms like GoDaddy.
Since then we've had the introduction of new gTLD:s with "registry premiums," domains that the registry deemed premium and that they charge more for annually than their regular domains (as well as limit the renewals to one year).
And while some registrars (Porkbun, Dynadot, etc.) have made an effort distinguishing the two:
Some registrars (NameCheap, GoDaddy, etc.) still conflates the two:
This is extremely confusing to new registrants...and I'd go so far as to say a predatory business practice. Because how is someone who's about to buy their first domain meant to figure out that these "premiums" are fundamentally different?
It also makes discussions concerning these domains difficult, because suppose a new registrant says they have a premium domain (that they don't want to disclose) that they need some help with or have a question about. There's a lot of effort needed to help them figure out and clarify whether they're talking about an aftermarket premium or a registry premium.
Please. Start differentiating between these.
