I'm a programmer and am looking for a way to mimic this service for .com/.net (for personal use) from domaintools.com without buying a membership:

http://www.domaintools.com/registrant-alert/?desc

Does anybody know if there is a site or sites that provide a downloadable list of new domains registered daily along with whois info or at least a registrant name or handle (it's not clear to me that "handles" are even used any more)?

I've read several suggestions of downloading the .COM zone file daily and detecting changes, but then I'd still have to do a whois lookup on a zillion records daily. This is not to be used for spam, I'm just interested in monitoring registrations of some business entities.

Thanks for any suggestions.

Compiling the list of daily regs isn't a problem, just do a 'diff' against the zone files.
The problem is to scrape the whois from the registrars for tens of thousands of domains a day.
Domaintools/NI is in a better position to get the job done as they have registrar credentials.

The task is a bit much unless you were going to commercialize it and get others involved.

In order to scan so many names you would need a high-end proxy provider who could vary your scanning IP about 100 times to avoid banning. I know a few such services and they cost about $250 a month.

Clearly if you were a server-based corp and used such a proxy already the cost could be minimal. But you still have to extract all your results and organize them as you see fit for your personal use. For a larger entity the usage and costs could be more easily divided.

DomainTools doesn't charge much. If your volume is high, I'm sure they'd give you a bulk discount.

I would actually be very low volume, maybe five to ten domains alerts per year. I don't mind paying something, but unfortunately they currently have a minimum $15 monthly charge which gives you 10 units per month. Ten units would last me over two years, so I don't like the idea of paying the extra money for something I won't use.

Their support desk said they are supposed to be adding "a la carte" functionality in the spring where I can just buy units without a monthly fee. I guess I'll just have to wait for that.

Many thanks for the replies!
